We hate to subject our dogs to the plastic "lampshade" collar after surgery or when the pooch has a skin ailment. However, there is a need for something to prevent biting and chewing which can cause serious harm.
We have successfully used the Pro Collar Inflatable Elizabethan Collar a href="http://www.arcatapet.com/category.cfm?catnum=245">http://www.arcatapet.com/category.cfm?catnum=245 > as an alternate to the very uncomfortable plastic lampshade type of collar when our Maltese had various surgeries. In fact, we used one on a poor rescue Maltese who had a severe reaction to flea bites.
The collars are effective and seem comfortable for a dog to wear. We could not find one the right size for Holly when she was spayed. She was too big for a small and a large slipped right off her head (she was probably about twelve pounds or so then). She needed a medium and we could not find one in time. I tried to find this collar at two local Petco Stores. I did not want to order online in advance because I wasn't sure about the proper size. Online purchase is a LOT cheaper than buying the collar at Petco. I thought that despite the extra cost at Petco, I could try the collar on Holly there. Unfortunately both stores in my locale were out of the proper size collar and it was too late to order online.
They are roughly twice the price of a standard "lampshade" type hard plastic collar but are much nicer both for the dog and the owners, No more bumping into furniture because the dog's vision is impaired by the big plastic "lampshade".
I do not know what I would have done with out mine, I love them also. Jordan has had to wear hers 3x now.
Jordan had a rough first part of her life.....
1st her spay and her allergic reaction to the stitches,2ed her stick incident (she stabbed herself with it while running) 3rd her gashes on both hind legs from my in laws pond.
Keep in mind all these were on Holidays. We got to know the staff at the ER Vet well.
in order X-mas Eve 2005, Easter day 2006, and Thanksgiving night 2006.
I asked Petco why it was so much cheaper on their website, they said their website is owned by in out side company and I did get 20% off for bringing that up.
This is what the shelter sent home with Jack because he had just been neutered before I adopted him. I liked it much better for the same reasons, he could eat, drink and lie down comfortably, didn't bump the walls, no vision impairment, etc.
But I think it's pricey.
Wow! I wish I had know about this last week. Maddy (our shep/hound mix) had to have a growth removed from her tail. She's 120 pounds (and about as tall as a dane) and is walking around the house with the plastic "lampshade" collar on like a bull in a china shop! We have another week to go. Had I know about this pre-surgery I'd have ordered one in advance! Both this one and the one from Amazon look great. I'd probably lean towards to the one from Amazon because odds are that Gaston-Cramer would pop the blow up one playing with Maddy! LOL
I'm actually thinking now of ordering the one from Amazon or one like it to have for spring time. Maddy has a allergies and licks her bum raw! (even with meds) I'd love this as a deterrent if its comfortable.
Thanks for the head's up Richard :) fabulous idea and very timely!
Oh, I wish I had heard of this 2 weeks ago when we had Beckett neutered. He needed to wear a "lampshade" too. I felt so bad for him. He looked so uncomfortable and was bumping into things. I'm going to remember these incase we ever need a collar again!
With interest I followed the discussion. I added a blog a couple of days ago regarding this "issue".
Benny got neutered last week and the vet gave us the choice between the lampshade collar and a so called medical pet shirt which works great for incisions. Everyone who is interested should read my blod and take a look at the website of the medical pet shirts.
My cousin used this for his cat and it was so nice - he loved it. Thanks for posting this because I am neutering my male on the 23rd. I didn't need anything for my female, but am thinking I may need something for Ozzie. Thanks so much for sharing this information - I was just thinking about it this week!!
