Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have two horribly destructive dogs and after a little over a year I think I've been patient enough. Does anyone have any suggestions on inexpensive Nanny Cam's to see who is the culperate? I have one mix sold to us as a F2 LD but as she grew thought she may have been a jackadoodle but at 18 mths she is looking real pointerish, I recently saw a Brittany that was the same coloring and look just different coat? Then my LD has severe separation anxiety and vet once suggested destruction was a typical side effect of the anxiety!

We walk, do the dog park, dog beach, and I play fetch EVERY NIGHT ALL NIGHT with the LD before going to bed (she CAN NOT sit still). I even give them a treat filled kong when I leave for work and don't make a fuss coming or going. I have an anxiety wrap for the LD I need to try (waiting for the cooler weather).

Of all the dogs I've owned these two take the cake. They are confined to the back room and backyard but the destruction is still out of this world and daily. I can't leave them outside because they cry, bark, and howl and I have one neighbor who's a real jerk (seven outdoor cats and he gets mad at the dogs in the neighborhood for barking at them - as they lounge on my sheds and roof)!

I was thinking if I can video and find out who is the problem I could get professional help for the right one, unfortunately we live on a very tight income. If I can narrow down the problem then focus on it.

I'll post this on the health issues site too, but just curious if any else's puppy is out of control constantly. Thanks.

I have used a camera on dogs.   A simple Logitech computer camera with an iphone app.  I can watch it live every time there is movement right from my phone.

There are a  lot of other ways to watch your dogs but if you have a smartphone, check out the apps.  The total cost for me was a $39.00 computer camera, and a $4.99 app from Itunes.

If this is not an option for you, borrowing a video camera might be an idea.

Do you provide a TV, a Radio, a Antler to chew on when you leave?

Thats perfect!  I don't have an Iphone but I do have a smart phone.  Do you leave your computer on with a webcam type effect?  I am such a dinosaur when it comes to computers!  lol  I have a video camera but it runs out of tape too soon?  The sad part is my mother is home with them all day but she refuses to sit in the back room with them?

Leave the computer on, the software on, and then the ap on your phone on.  The directions are simple enough

Why do you need a camera if you have a human being in your house with them all day? Seems lie if the destruction is that bad it wouldn't be too hard to catch them in the act.

My mother is 88 and doesn't move well. Once she gets herself situated in the front room she doesn't move until I get home. The dogs are in the back of the house. I tried allowing free range so they could sit with my mom but all they did was get into mischief.

The dogs move fast and I think she's worried about being knocked over, that and she likes looking out the front window! Plus she needs a lift chair and they ate the cord in the back room so that chair no longer works.

Have you tried crating them? I crate Ollie with the radio on and I think it helps him feel safe when I'm gone...maybe it would help your two

Yeah, crating doesn't work.  If you read my story of bringing her home you'll understand!  After cleaning up the last mess Friday I thought of putting the crate in front of the doggy door that way they can come in but they can't get too far??  If I find a mess tonight I'm gonna give it a try.

There is no doubt whatever they destroy has my scent on it.  SOMEHOW they got a book I was keeping medical notes in (binder), the ONLY pages torn were the ones I wrote on and touched!  I may have to wear rubber gloves so as to not leave my scent on anything!!!!

What type of MESS are you talking about. Poop, tearing up furniture?

As for the anxiety wrap, do not LEAVE your dog with the wrap on. Read the directions for the wrap. It should only be on a short time.  It is not recommended for longer periods. My wrap said 20 mins.

I had a very anxious girl and it never made her comatose but I do feel it may have helped her some.

Are these dogs anxious when you are home?   Are they fearful?

No poop but tearing up anything and everything they can get their mouths around; wallpaper, wood, carpet, furniture, my scrapbooking tote with EVERYTHING in it! (grrrrr).  Friday was the remote control, up high have no idea HOW they got it but half of it is missing!  I clean up stuff everyday and some of it I really have no idea where or what if came from?

Her new bad habit is peeing just outside the doggy door on the patio, not sure if that was because of the rain or what, but the carpet piece (which hasn't been eaten yet) is covered in pee????  This started just after my sister left?

Again I think I'm supposed to build up wearing the anxiety wrap to the whole day?  I gotta find the instructions.  That was the first few times we put it on her she laid in the corner and did not move, or want to play which is totally not like her.  It actually freaked me out.  10 minutes after taking it off she was herself again, very weird!

When I am with them they are perfectly fine, they'll grad a toy or a stick to chew on occasionally.  Sassparilla always wants to play and usually has a ball or toy in her mouth at all times, sleeping/eating/peeing/traveling/etc.  They wrestle together and play chase then spend time sleeping, but when I'm gone it's demolition time!

Sassy is kind of a scardy cat?  If there is a possum on the fence she'll run in the house while the other one barks uncontrolably?

Talk with your vet AGAIN.

The anxiety your are describing is separation anxiety. It can be serious in dogs and very debilitating.  Sad.

There are medications you can try under the supervision of the vet to HELP this dog.  Not only will it help the dog, it will stop destruction in your home.

Yes, many of us have had a very sick dog like this and it helps.  One of my doodles had other anxiety problems but was given a separation anxiety medication- Clomopramin. You can read my journey with this med in the anxiety group.

I hope you can understand this dog is suffering greatly.  Maybe some of our discussions in that group can give you some ideas to talk with your vet about.

I'll check it out. Raising a daughter with disabilities I understand the issues surrounding it, my daughter struggles with ADHD, OCD, Depression, ODD and in her senior year in high school was diagnosed with Aspergers.  She looks completely normal but society can't deal with her impulsivity/difiance/compulsiveness.  She's doing better but still considered an outcast.  We go back to the vet for some vaccinations Saturday so we'll discuss it again. He mentioned meds but wanted to wait till she was past her puppy phase.  She has a heart murmur and both he and the cardiologist think the anxiety might be a factor (one way or the other)?
