Snapdragons are actually a cooler weather plant. They don't mind 40 degree weather. Mostly snapdragons are considered annuals, but they can establish themselves and turn into a perennial in some gardens. Looks like yours is quite happy has established itself in your garden ! I wouldn't worry about loosing it so much now. Very pretty !
Thanks Sheila! What is unusual about this one (I think) is that it is the same plant that has continued to live for 3 years. It is in a pot and is not reseeding but rather growing out of the old stock. Our weather can dip into the 20's and on rare occasions into the minus figures. On cold day/nights I throw an old blanket or towel over it to keep the pot and roots from freezing.
I have had snapdragons come back from that the next spring. The thing that kills mine is when I don't cover them in the winter, or we have a VERY hot summer and they just fry ! That doesn't happen very often though.
Right! Who else that you know tucks their plants in at night? LOL Our temps can range from 110 to -5 with 110 being much more common than -5. Twenty below sounds down right awful! It sounds like snapdragon are a pretty hardy plant. I enjoy their beauty and they remind me of my childhood when I would pick the blossoms and turn them into animal finger puppets!
Whaaat.... 105 ?? Oh sheesh, you can keep that temp right there with you in the great state of Oregon ! I'd take the -5, or even the -20 over 110 anyday ! lol
Keep covering your plants. The more you save the less you have to replace come spring ! I remember playing with snapdragons like that too. Aaah the "old" days ! :)
I have a pot full that I planted in the spring that I just figured would be annuals and they are still going strong. I usually buy some every year, one of my DD's favorites, but I always pulled them out in the fall. Maybe I'll be lucky!!
We'll have to meet up here next Spring and compare Snapdragon stories!
I overwinter some annuals in the house but really I know I'd be better off from a work & appearance point of view buying new robust specimens in spring. BTW, I read about some new disease of impatiens. Supposedly many nurseries plan to stock alternatives.
Oh, no not impatiens! They are one of the few flowering plants that do well on my shady property! That is, when I can keep the deer out of them. :(
Wow, impatiens have always been a staple, will have to rethink this!
