Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Wherever we go, people ask me what breed of dog Duncan is. I think a lot of folks have an image that comes to mind when they think of a labradoodle, and my Dood (with his black, straight-ish fur) apparently does not fit the description :). When people ask what breed he is and make a guess, they come up with the following:

Irish Wolf Hound -65% of guesses
Portuguese Water Dog - 20% of guesses
Labradoodle - 10% of guesses
Giant Schnauzer 5% of guesses

Ok, so I personally think the Giant Schnauzer and Water Dog are a bit of a stretch, but a lot of people do think he is an Irish Wolf Hound. I am curious - what breeds do people mistake your doodle for?

Kona is dark (no longer black as he was as a pup) but the most common error is Portuguese Water Dog.

Most people don't even bother venturing a guess, they just ask what Luna is. :)

If they're going to guess...

Most common:

Duck Tolling Retriever  (Luna definitely looks like one from the back, but her head shape is different and she doesn't have white markings.  She's also about the same size as one, but less stocky since she has a poodle build.)

Almost as common:

Golden Retriever (then they say "wait... she's kind of small... is she a mix?).  Luna's WAY too small to be a Golden - she can fit UNDER a full-sized Golden's belly.

Portuguese Water Dog and at a grooming and retail convention this year I had two people ask if Kona was a Logotto Romagnolo.  One of these people owned a logotto and swore Kona was the spitting image of theirs.  They were very sweet people and gushed all over Kona, they missed their baby.

Here's a pick of a Logotto, I think you can see the resemblence :)

I have never heard of that breed. My goodness there are several doodles on DK that would be mixed up with these! Very cute!

Never heard of Logotto at all.

Here's a Dogs101 on them.  They are an breed older than the Poodle :)

Here's a link to the AKC info on Lagottos, which may be more accurate than the stuff on Dogs 101, lol:

They are not a recognized breed in this country. They're very rare and are first being considered for AKC FSS status, which is the first step toward AKC breed recognition, probably because there are so few of them here.

I thought the video of the pups playing was cute to share :)  There are some breeders in AZ, and my noswork instructor said she saw one at her last trial.  Perfect sport for these guys.

One day when I was walking our two doodles, our double-doodle was confused with a Lagotto, by a woman we met in the park who said she had raised two of them. I had to go home and look up the breed because I wasn't familiar with it. However, she correctly identified our golden doodle. :)

She is so beautiful!

Labradoodle, poodle, wheaten, and this is my all time favorite: a bedlington terrier!!!!!

I've had at least 10 people ask if Annie is an Airedale, or part Airedale. It's the only breed people have 'guessed' - with only 2 people ever guessing "labradoodle" - most EVERYONE else, just asks what kind of dog she is. :)

So we have
30% "Airedale"
5% "Labradoodle"
65% "What kind of dog is that?"
