Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I only have one Doodle now but Daphne's mother is retiring from breeding and we will be picking her up from the breeder in about 2 weeks. Daphne is 10 months old and her mother will be 4 in March. Since this is her actual Mother, who will be the alpha? Daphne was here first but it is her Mama. Will they know each other? I have heard it is not likely they will remember each other. How can that be true? Anybody have any experience with Mother and Daughter?

In mid December I acquired Pepper, she is my Goldendoodle's mother.  Sheba just turned 4 in December and Pepper was 5 last September.  They have been separated much longer than yours but I don't think they remember each other at all.  I will be interested to see what you think after Daphne's Mama arrives.  : )

BTW, Daphne is beautiful and I love your profile photo.  Congratulations on your new family member!

My Sheba is on the left and her poodle mother, Pepper, is in the middle.  I love how their fur matches.

Their fur match, but the third doodle matches the couch!  What a great photo!  I love the way they all cross their paws for the photo.  It is so ladylike.

My husband noticed how nicely Duke matches the couch, too, Lynda. : ). Although Duke isn't a lady he can act pretty prissy at times. Seriously! Lol

Beautiful family!!  I love how they each have their paws crossed . . . left over right.  :-)

Thanks for responding Ann. Do They get along well? Just wondering what kind of changes to expect.

Yes, they get along very well. Both Sheba and Pepper are sweet natured so that helps. At first Pepper just wanted to hump all of the time and it irritated all of the dogs. But she is much better about the way she plays and they play often. I dont think she knew how to play as she lived in a kennel. The only time she was able to play is when she was bred. The thing is, you never know how two dogs will respond to eachother. Hopefully everything works out for you and your doods and there won't be any issues. I have fostered quite a few doodles and I have had very few issues. They love to play!

I just read your Christmas wish for Pepper. I hope that your wish is coming true! I know that Daphne's Mom has not had the same kind of life. I've been told that she is treated as a family pet and has a very loving and sweet personality. I know there will still be a big adjustment period. We have only had one Doodle and she has the run of the house. She is our Princess! I'm sure her Mama has not lived that way since they have so many dogs. I worry about her broken heart since she will not understand why we took her away from the only home she has ever known. We will help her however we can and I'm sure I can learn some valuable things here on DK! Daphne loves to play so hopefully they will enjoy playing together!

Having fostered and watching dogs adjust to our foster home and keeping in touch with the adoptive families I have found that most dogs adjust pretty well. With my foster dogs it usually takes a couple of weeks for the dog to get the hang of things and feel to comfortable. In my experience, after a couple weeks they start to show more of their personality. Most of my dogs were strays and a few were given up by their owners. If Daphne's mom was a family pet she may adjust pretty quickly. Don't be surprised if some issues pop up. It always happens here! lol Just give her lots of love! I've had as many as 5 dogs here at once and have managed to hug them all at once! : )
I hope they get along great. I love watching my dogs play together.

Thank you, about Pepper. : ) She is doing pretty well. Thanks goodness she is finally eating well, I was pulling my hair out over that one! She now comes into the kitchen when I say it's time to eat. She's even gained a couple of pounds! She is very, very skittish. If something happens that scares her we end up loosing ground we already gained. *sigh* She does like to play with the other dogs though, even Duke will play with her and he doesn't usually play with any dogs except for Sheba.
She was spayed last Thursday and is recovering well. But, it was a new experience for her and she was terrified when I dropped her off. Luckily she did well on the way home because she was still a little loopy from the meds. It's just going to take some time with her.

We will definitely give her lots of love! My husband is concerned about Daphne being jealous and changing her whole world. We have had other dogs stay with us when family members go out of town. I have never really noticed her being jealous, but then again, they never lived here longer than a few days. She usually just wants to play with them but they are too old to bother with her. She has LOTS of puppy energy! Daphne's mother will be 4 in March so I'm hoping she still has lots of energy too.

I'm so glad Pepper is coming around! I guess most everything is a new experience for her. Poor thing! We will have Daphne's mom spayed after she gets here too so that will be interesting. it was hard keeping Daphne calm and not running and jumping when she was spayed. I will probably wait about a month to give her time to adjust to us. Her last litter is 7 weeks old so I should have a few months before she goes into heat again.

I don't think it really matters.  I doubt they will "know" each other, but if they get along with other doodles, they will be delighted to have another dog in the household.  Remember to introduce them outside your house so Daphne does not feel imposed upon by a new dog.  She will invite the new dog inside quite quickly but let it be her who brings her mother into the house.  It makes a difference in dog language.

Thanks Lynda, that's great advice! We will be driving to Michigan to pick her up so I'm hoping to get the two of them playing in the snow. They will also have a long car ride together so hopefully they will start to bond then. When we get back home I will let Daphne take the lead into the house.

We are thinking of double doodling too. Lori, Daphne and Lucy, how did the addition go? What breeder in Michigan did you get the Mom from?
