Coconut oil for dogs????

So on tis website K9 for human training or something like that they have a link about the benefits of coconut oil for dogs.....anti cancer, joints, skin, weight control etc.....I actually use coconut oil for myself...I honestly just eat it because its a healthier oil....

What always pulls on my heart strings is the fact it can prevent cancer...besides for an accidental death..this is my fear for Jack.....

I was going to post in food group...but I think this is supposed to be a supplement, One teaspoon per 10 pounds?????

I think there's a big difference between putting any kind of oil on your hands or body as a moisturizer, and consuming it because some "alternative" website, or somebody selling snake oil, tells you it can prevent cancer, lose weight, etc. Since coconut oil has come up several times in TFG, I have continued to research it each time it does, and there is nothing to indicate that it has any particular health benefits and nothing about cancer mentioned at all.

A friend started putting a small amount on her dog's food.  He loves it, and he is a very picky eater.  She has also noticed that he is shedding less, and his coat is softer.  If you are concerned about preventing cancer try Beta Glucan 1,3

Fish oil would do the same things for a dog's coat, and he would be getting beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids at the same time, and no saturated fats.

I found an article in the magazine, Dogs Naturally, that I got for free from my local pet food store. The article was called Allergies and Coconut Oil. It went on to list several benefits of coconut oil including; helps against bacterial infections and inflammation, helps against yeast and fungal infections, helps support healthy gastrointestinal system, and helps balance the immune system. It claims that the high amounts of lauric acid is considered to be responsible for many of coconut oil's health benefits. Now I am not supporting any of these claims, I was just reporting what I found in a magazine. The author is the cofounder of company that does sell and promot coconut...just FYI.

So basically, what you read was an ad, not an article. None of these claims have one bit of research behind them, and some of them are flat out ridiculous.

No it was an article...but no scientific data behind it...as far as I can tell...I will post link ,...I mean this sincerely...I love coming here and having you all vote my ideas Hokum....it saves me so much money!!!

My response was to Chelsie's post, about the "article" she read that was written by the cofounder of a company that markets and sells coconut oil, lol. That's an ad.

Yes, no scientific evidence but a convincing story..or not so convincing story........the more I read on the website....the more I see it is more alternative stuff....not that I am against it.......but you have to know it is what it is.


I did. Find an interesting study that appears to be bale to be backed with some facts about how long on average each immunization lasts ...of course Jack will still be titer tested.....but it was interesting......

I did research the author of the article, turns you, now I know are going to be SURPRISED, nope, not a vet, nto a nutritionist, not even a dietician.. a journalist with a passion for dogs.. I really should research more before I post on here.

The article in the magazine was indeed an article. It of course was her opinion, but that is what most of this stuff is on this site. There were no pictures of her products anywhere. It tells you who the author is and what she does, not an advertisement for her products. There have been lots of studies done on the health benefits of lauric acid, which is found in the highest amounts in virgin coconut oil. I wouldn't automatically translate this to dogs, but it would be something to think about and see where this develops. I am sure there are plenty of people who find giving their pets and themselves virgin coconut oil very beneficial. Not all saturated fats are created equally...I wouldn't be so quick to judge anything.
