Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Good morning!

Has anyone ever heard of/owned an ultimatedoodle?  I came across a breeder that is breeding what they call ultimatedoodles (a labradoodle crossed with a goldendoodle).  They say it incorporates the best of the labradoodles and goldendoodles, but I'm wondering if it might just be too much of a mix between several breeds...  Any thoughts?

Thanks :)

Lots of breeders are crossing Goldendoodles with Labradoodles. They are commonly called "Double Doodles" or North American retrievers. Quite a few members here have them. This "Ultimate doodle"  thing is just a marketing tool, something this person made up to seem like she has something special or unique. I would use the same criteria to evalutae this breeder as any other. Mixed breed dogs are mixed breed dogs, regardless of what the mix is, they get different genes from both parents randomly, and they are just as unredictable as any other kind of doodle.

In fact, if both parents are F1s, you have a greatly increased chance of shedding and dogs with flatter coats and smooth faces. That's true whether both parents are LDs, GDs, or one of each.

Stephanie, it is really important that you read the article I linked above about what to look for in a breeder. This breeder you are talking about here does not appear to do genetic testing on her breeding dogs. This is crucial. Please do not support irresponsible breeding practices by buying a puppy from anyone who breeds untested dogs who may pass along serious genetic illnesses..

She also breeds F2s, which most experienced doodle breeders do not do, as it does not produce the types of coats that most people want in a doodle. However, that's just a matter of taste. The testing is what is important.

She also appears to have a LOT of litters at one time. That doesn't speak well for the amount of time, attention, care, socialization, or training the puppies get.

I see an awful lot of red flags here.

Thanks for your advice.  After looking at the website again I do notice many red flags.  I was just curious about the ultimate doodle/ double doodle breed in general.  I will definitely look at your link though and would definitely not want to support an irresponsible breeder and/or purchase a puppy that has not had testing done!

It isn't the puppies that have testing done, it is the parents. Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, and Poodles all carry many, many genetic diseases, some of which can be devastating. No dog should ever be bred unless it has first had genetic testing done to determine that the dog does not carry genes for the diseases common to those breeds. This is not the same as going to the vet for health checks. A dog can appear healthy but in fact be carrying for some horrendous diseases. Please, read the article.

And the dogs are housed in "kennels" separate from the home, with the puppies in kennels in the basement. :(

Hi, I purchased Chloe, who is a double doodle from the breeder who you are talking about. I was not aware of the need for testing and didn't know about this site. She is a great dog and came very socialized, but now I am concerned about genetic problems. This breeder was recommended by someone in my town, who had been to her farm.

Dee, Chloe might be just fine.  You definitely WANT a breeder who tests for hereditary problems, but even though it is irresponsible to not test, not testing is not a guarantee there will be a problem.  It just means we don't know what is in her health background is.

Stephanie, I think Karen has given you excellent advice. I would just like to add I would be leery of anyone who advertises their puppies as UltimateDoodles. There is no such thing as a Super Dog. Doodles are mixed breed dogs and every one of them is different.

A little investigation shows that she also breeds several other breeds of dogs under a different kennel name. :(

I just looked at one site that came up when I searched "Ultimate Doodles", it was interesting to find that they had four older puppies listed under 'Trained Dogs' that are all from the same litter, listed as Ultimate Doodles and all four look very much like a retriever and nothing like a poodle. I think this may be the same breeder that Karen referred to and they do seem to have way too many litters for the puppies to be socialized properly and no mention of any health testing of any kind.

One of our doodles is a goldendoodle/labradoodle cross. As previously mentioned, they are also referred to as double-doodles or North American Retrievers. Our breeder did perform genetic testing, but I agree that it's really important to make sure the breeder has a good reputation and doesn't have any red flags listed in the previous posts. Our double doodle has a wavy coat, but his coat is coarse compared with our goldendoodle's soft coat. We love them both!
