Mojo is 11 and 1/2 months old and I brush him every week to 10 days and he never had a mat. He gets some easy out tangles behind his front legs at times but no biggie. I wouldn't dare bathe him he would go berserk as he did when I put his feet in a wash tub to get the mud off. He has been groomed twice sine I got him at 8 weeks and is going for the third grooming on Monday. He is very well behaved for the groomer. She clips him to one inch and partially scissors him. His hair was 5 inches before grooming and never a mat. When the adult coat is fully in I intend to keep his hair long.
It's hard to tell, because you haven't posted any photos of your doodle, but from your profile photo, it looks like your pup has an open-face and may have more of a retriever coat. If that's the case, he isn't going to matt or need the kind of grooming that a typical doodles does. His grooming requirements would be more like those of a Golden Retriever.
Does he shed?
No difference, genes are genes whether they come from mom or dad. One from each parent for each characteristic, and which one shows up is a spin of the roulette wheel, lol.
Jackdoodle is an F1, too. He sheds like crazy, doesn't matt, and never needs haircuts. He does have the facial furnishings, but his coat is very much like a golden retriever's, long and mostly straight. But he does need to be brushed or he looks very rumpled and messy, like an unmade bed.
Dogs who shed usually don't matt, and vice versa. The hair gets to a certain length and falls out, as opposed to growing and growing down into itself and forming matts. So doodles who are more "retrieverish" don't have the same grooming requirements as doodles with poodlier coats who don;t shed.
I feel lucky too, Cheryl! Kona is a multigen on both sides. His mom is an F1B Goldendoodle and his dad is a multi-gen Australian Labradoodle. I feel like I lucked out with his wavy fleece that hasn't matted at all yet (he is 6 months). I comb him 2 or 3 times a week and there is never a snarl. I've only taken him in once (at 4 months) to have a free bath at Pet Smart (no cutting) and I was FURIOUS when I picked him up and saw that they completely shaved his nose and bridge and around the eyes. I had specifically told them to not cut any of his hair, and they later told me that they did it to surprise me as a free gift and that I'm the only doodle owner who doesn't like their dog's nose to be shaved". It has been two months now and he is just now starting to get his old doodle face back. I guess I should be happy to see how slow his hair grows because it means less clipping.
I plan to keep his hair as long as possible and just trim the hairs that block his vision. I don't plan to do anything but scissor cuts in his future, but we shall see! I get a little nervous when I read about other doodles "blowing their puppy coat" or "matting like crazy when the adult coat comes in", so I can't speak to that yet. I hope that he remains being the exception.
I hate to admit this for fear the grooming group will head out and take my dogs, but I hardly ever brush my two dogs. Vern very rarely mats. Fudge does mat here and there and I will work on those mats, but sometimes I just cut them out :) My groomer likes me because I have low standards. LOL I have them groomed regularly and keep their coats shorter. Fudge does not shed at all and Vern sheds just a little. When I do brush them, I try and make it a calm and relaxing time for them and catch them when they are in a sleepy state. My dogs seem to like it, so that helps. Maybe you could try brushing him and treating, so he associates it with something good.
Laurie I am so glad you posted this because I was actually afraid to admit that I hardly ever brush Libby. She does not mat nor does she shed. She goes to the groomer every three weeks and I keep her coat at a medium length. Our granddaughters brush her every now and then only because it is fun for them, but her fur just stays nice and neat. Libby is so easy and it is nice for us "old" folks:)
Lonnie, I would like to say my dogs stay nice and neat, but usually they arrive at the groomer's looking homeless :) Luckily, she puts up with us! LOL
Very true here too! At the end of her three weeks she definitely needs her spa day! When I say nice and neat, I mean her cut. As for her, OMD some days she gets so bad we have to hose her off! With all the grass we have in the backyard she likes to play in the flower beds with the dirt. Go figure! Then she looks at us like "what's a little mud"?
