I am thinking of naming my dog (either male or female), not sure which gender I'll get yet, an unusual name. Not so unusual, but more uncommon. I love books, so I was trying to think of character names from some of my favorite books. Everyone I talk to tells me to name a dog something more silly, not as serious. I'm conflicted!

Also, according to this recent NY Times article, you shouldn't give a dog a "person's" name but I love them for dogs! They said to stay away from consonants too..

Here are my choices so far:
Males: Beau (does it sound too much like no?), Milo, Frances, Dodger (Oliver Twist)
Females: Dagny (Atlas Shrugged) Dorrit (Little Dorrit)
Phoebe (catcher in the rye)

I'm really loving Frances for either a male of female. It's a version of Franny from Franny & Zooey, a version of Franz from Swiss Family Robinson & the Sound of Music, & the author of The Secret Garden.

I like Dodger & Dorrit too. I really want a name from a Dickins novel that isn't the common ones (like Oliver)

Any literary names you all can think of?

I recently ran into someone who named their doodle "Cheese".   It took me a moment to realize it was short for "Cheese Doodle".

Now that is what I call an unusual name for a dog!  Pretty funny though!

You will have to see your doodle for a while then the name will come to you. Husband a NY er so our first doodle was named Shea, after the ball field. The second doodle  "s name came out of a hat with lots of names that the grands picked. Mya was drawn. Aja was a Steely Dan song.Love all the names...they fit them. Shea looked like a Murphy to me ,but I love the name Shea. Have fun picking a name...

I think I've settled on Stewart Frances. My mom suggested I name the dog after her, like you'd name a child after its Grandmom, since I don't want human children LOL & Stewart is her maiden name. It's an old Scottish name & since the dog will be red, I think it fits. Also, since I'm smart & bookish like a professor, it sounds like a unique name for me to give a dog LOL. I think it fits because Doodles are so smart & always look like they're "thinking". My mom even said we'll need to get the pup an argyle sweater, which I'm dying over--it would be SO cute!

Jeez, now I need to hope for males in the litter!! Joanna, I'm pretty sure the litter will be born in August. The female is supposed to go into heat in June, but a few of the females are in heat now, so you never know if they sync up. That happened with the last litters!

I like it! Good choice!

Even if you get a female you can still play with that name. Frances Stewart would work for a female.

I guess you can see I'm a fan of naming dogs people names! :)

There are many good possibilities in the Jane Austen novels. Just a few:

From Pride and Prejudice:

Darcy

Denny

Carter

Lucas

or

Elliott from Persuasion

Ellie from Sense and Sensibility

From Northanger Abbey

Jackson

Skinner

Sophia

Have fun naming your new baby! You'll know when you hear "the one"!

Off subject, but I saw a sweatshirt with the words "I'd rather be reading Jane Austin."  I was tempted to get it.  :)

Pat, I would have been tempted too!

I like Elliot for some reason!  I don't think there are any on DK.

I liked Elliot, but couldn't use is since I already had my Ellie. We went to a dog park after getting Oliver and met a Great Dane named Elliot and it just fit him!! They called him Big E for short. Lol

Big E! Love that!

Oliver all the way!!!!
