Thanks so much for your support during Chance’s recent surgery and the dreaded wait for the path report.
The good news is that the oral masses were not malignant. The bad news is that they are an uncommon variant of viral papillomas. This is infectious and can be transmitted to other dogs with immature immune systems (puppies) or dogs with compromised immune systems.
Chance most likely got this when he was being groomed—his last grooming corresponds with the incubation period for this virus. He must now wait approximately two month to play with other puppies, and I will need to check his mouth carefully for new growths. Papillomas also can grow in the throat and so I will also need to monitor for choking sounds as he eats.
But for now, the masses are gone and hopefully my little guy is on the mend!
Hugs and kisses to from Chance to all of his DK friends.

Great news for Chance and you. Not so great for the groomer. I bet you won't be going back there. After three years of grooming my dogs myself, because I never found one I liked, my vet has a groomer working from his office once a week. Monday I am taking Roo and Tigger for a "heads and tails". Now I am having second thoughts again.
Right, I won't be going back and I will attempt to groom Chance myself for awhile.
But if Roo and Tigger don't have compromised or immature (puppy) immune systems, they are not likely to get this particular virus.
Yay...I am so glad to hear the little guy is looking good! Let's get him to grow up a little so he can outgrow that immature immune system! I think he will be just fine. Hopefully this was a one time deal! Is he snuggling tonight with his snuggle puppy? xo
Yep, he sleeps with snuggle puppy most every night :)
Get some Thuja extract. It's $10 or so at health food stores and whole foods.
4 drops in food every meal. within a week , they all disappear and you can go off the meds.
i thought it was complete BS. tried it as a last resort. then it worked.
I am thrilled to hear that Chance doesn't have malignancies. I am sorry he even got something at all. Lots of questions? Is it highly contagious? Can he get it again or is is one of those one time occurrences? Now that you know what it was, is surgical repair the only way to go or might it be self-healing?
It is highly contagious, but they don't know the exact mechanism of transmission. They aren't sure if the dog is contagious before the papilloma emerge, and they aren't sure how long a dog remains contagious after the papilloma are gone.
The good news is that most dogs outgrown this--it primarily affects dogs less than 2 years old. It is not transmitted to other species, including humans. And yes, if Chance is unlucky enough to have more papilloma, they can be treated without surgery in most cases.
Poor Chance.... I am glad to hear he is on the mend. I hope he never gets another one and just gets to be a happy carefree doodle.
Hugs to Chance♥
I am so glad to hear that he will be getting better, great news!
This really is good news...always something with our Doodles.
So glad he will be fine! So many catchy things out there-kinda scary.
