New to the site. Just wondering if anyone has used the Preventic Tick Collar to deal with the little buggers. Me and the Murph will be hiking in the woods during the summer and even though I'm in NYC a lot of the time I'll be in NJ or upstate NY a lot. I have been checking the net for tick prevention and there is a lot of opinions. I was checking out the preventic collar and while its a "chemical collar", from what I read it seems to do the job for most dogs. If anyone feels like putting their two cents in about it or any other way to keep the ticks at bay much thanks.

Have a doodle day!

I use Frontline Plus.  It works on fleas and ticks.  We live in the woods and I just found a tick on Bailey ...but it was dead!

Now, if I could just keep them off ME while I am working in the yard, I would be a happy camper!

I don't like the idea of a collar with chemicals  being so close to the dogs face all the time.  Just my opinion.

Frontline has been around for a very long time and it works well.

I also use Frontline Plus and it has been effective for my dogs.

I would stay away from collars and go with a monthly treatment such as Frontline, Trifexis, Advantix, etc..

You can search past discussions for the most helpful info.  You can click on "view all" at the bottom of the discussions and then use the search bar of the page it takes you to.  If you simply type in "flea" you'll get tons of discussions.

Or search "ticks".  Most discussions about one cover the other :)

We use Frontline Plus and our dogs get a Lyme's vaccine every year.

We use Frontline Plus.  It does take care of the ticks, but it is an insecticide and I hate using it on the dogs, who share our house and our beds.  However, it is better than the alternative.  The dogs still get ticks, but they are dead when you find them.  We have never had fleas.  Oh, and the Frontline Plus does not keep ticks off you, just kills them when they bite the dogs.  Of course, we can feel them climbing on us.

Lynda...it sure is a creepy feeling when those little guys climb on you isn't it!  I get freaked out every time! They are so gross!

We don't have ticks where I live in So. California but in Northern California they do.  We took our Gracie Doodle up to visit our daughter and her dog.  Gracie came home with three ticks and at the time it didn't even cross my mind to look for them.  I had never seen one in my entire life.  Well, now when we go up I put Frontline Plus on her and then when we get there I use the Preventic collar.  Though I can't vouch for it because we have not taken her into the mountains where we let the dogs run. Though I would think that the Los Gatos Creek trail that we have walked the dogs on and let run free for a while would have had them.  My daughter doesn't use anything and when she takes her Rhodesian Ridgeback "off road" she gets them.  But they are very easy to remove on a dog with skin tight fur.  Nothing can hide on Ridgebacks!!!

Is it okay to use Frontline AND a collar?  We use only Frontline, every 1st of the month along with Heartguard.

If you use Frontline why not just use Frontline Plus?

Sorry...I meant to say Frontliine Plus.  As far as using it and a collar together, I only do that a few times a year and only when we are visit possible tick environments.  I put the Frontline Plus on a number of days before adding the collar and I take the collar off and put it in a ziplock baggie when we are not out on an adventure such as a romp in the mountains or woods.  Around the house she does not wear it!

I use Frontline Plus now but I've been considering switching to Advantix II. I just don't like that with Frontline they have to get bit before it works instead of repelling them,  I haven't really done any research on Advantix II yet though. Does anyone use that?
