I am so shook up I can barely type. We were out on our a.m. walk when suddenly this dog got out of his yard and attacked JD. I had to drop his leash, he was trapped. JD put up a fight but he's handicapped by his ruptured disc, and he fell. The other dog was over him down on the ground, I was screaming and trying to kick the other dog, I don't even know exactly what happened, my brain just shut down and it's a blur, it all happened so fast, but the dog was off of him by the time the owners came out. I was mostly worried about JD's back and didn't even know he was bitten until we got home. He has a puncture wound with a tear under his eye (thank God he missed the eye itself) and a big scrape across the top of his head. We're just back from the ER. They cleaned it and gave me pain meds and antibiotics...just what he needs with his IBD. I may not give him the pain meds, but I have to give him the amoxicillin, which is certain to upset his stomach. And I have to apply warm compresses to the wound under his eye several times a day for a few days so it doesn't scab up too fast. I am so upset I'm shaking. That dog got out of that yard so fast and so easily, they may as well not even have had a fence.

Going to pick up his amoxicillin now. Poor JD.

Thanks, Jane.

No wine yet, I have to cook chicken this afternoon, and I have enough trouble dealing with stoves when I'm sober, lol.

JD just loves his neighborhood routes. He has several favorites and I usually let him choose which way he wants to go on any given day or night. I think if we drove somewhere, he's either be confused or expect me to throw a ball for him, lol.

I also live in a pretty heavily populated area, and it would be tough to have to drive 30 or 40 minutes to an unpopulated area every a.m.and p.m. for his regular walks. And in a strange neighborhood we might have the same problem. At least in this neighborhood, I know where the problems are, lol.

Got it....just make sure he doesn't pick THIS route (although it's doubtful he'll want to).  You really need to visit Karen....I'll teach you how to drink wine and cook at the same time. LOL

LOLOL!

First you have to teach me how to cook, period. The wine drinking I've got down. :-)

I am just now reading this post.  I just wanted to tell you I am so sorry this happened.  I completely understand how hysterical you must have been because I would be the same way.  I am very glad that your neighbor offered to pay the bills (as he should have done).  In my opinion, I don't care how much JD barks at their dog while they walk.  It doesn't excuse an actual attack.  Did I read that the dog has a fence?  Is it too low of a fence for the size of dog or something?  That would make me really nervous to walk that way again.  I usually carry mace on my walks just for that reason.  I am always scared though if I had to use it because I might accidentally mace my own doodles.  Maybe I should invest in one of those loud horns or something.  Have you thought about that?

Thanks, Traci. I was too upset to really take a good look, but they have a 4 foot chain link fence and I think their gate is old, maybe the latch wasn't pushed down securely and it opened when the dog pushed against it.

Poor JD, and poor you.  I can't imagine how scary that was for you and your sweet doodle boy!  Hugs to you and Jack!!

Thanks, Elizabeth.

Oh NO!  I'm shaken just reading this Karen.   : (     I'm so very sorry you and JD went thru such a horrendous experience.   I can only imagine how scary it must have been for both of you.   Thankfully the injuries were not serious.   I'll be holding JD in my prayers that the medicine doesn't set him back in other ways.    (((HUGS)))) to you both.

Thanks, Carol!

Karen, I'm so sorry this has happened to JD, and you.  I know I would be a complete wreck if it had been Haley and me.  Hope that JD has a speedy recovery with no side effects from the meds.

Thank you, Anne!
