Have you made your own plant stakes? What items around the house did you make them from?
My husband made a trellis out of the twirl rods from mini-blinds. I don't have a picture right now, but I'll post later.
I saw this at Lowes yesterday, but no way was I going to purchase one for $15.00 I need many for beans, peas, peppers. Low to the ground ( about 15 inches). I think this would last a few months. Untreated, very thin, and one pepper would make it topple over. They looked nice enough... but really, did our parents ever dream of purchasing a $15.00 trellis for one plant? NOT
What have you done, that looks attractive but functional?
I took these photos about 10 days ago. The garden was pretty much still dormant then and not cleaned up for Summer so excuse the winter mess.
Already, the Snow Peas have taken to our home-made trellis. It is low to the ground but long~ to fill the row, instead of tall.
This one is made from Furring Strips~ long thin strips of wood. The sides are paint stir sticks :)

I just had the handy man fix the wooden trellis on my front porch. I bought these "mending strips" metal gizmos to put it together again. The arbor like thing on my front walk is keeling over from my wisteria and he is going to put big posts to support it. These flimsy wooden things don't hold up. What I have used and keep around are pieces of rebar. They camouflage well and could hold up elephants. They last forever and I have reused them many times. HD has them in different lengths. they cost a bit but last forever.
Rebar is interesting.
My parents used rebar too, worked great. We had an old wood ladder we grew pumpkins on? Garage sales you can get real creative with what you can find!
Cant do pics now, but I h ave answers... stay tuned.
Good.
Great. And Sharon I just thought of you yesterday. Wondering how you and your Green House has come along :)
i will update, the green house is doing very well. we have at least 2 weeks of frost danger, i'm tempted to move it to the next garden plot and put in tomatoes and peppers. so maybe i need 2 green houses?
: )
F.J. made this trellis for me after I told him what I wanted.
Long, not so tall. About 20 inches in height. I'm happy. See updated pics above
I like your little trellis.
FJ did a great job, it is so nice to see things coming back to life. I just came in from doing a some long overdue clean up in the yard. The weather has been good but oh my gosh the wind has been terrible and makes cleanup really difficult. The trees are finally starting to get their leaves and plants are starting to grow. Mr Quincy is very naughty and likes to steal my bamboo sticks that I use to hold up plants that need a little support. Bamboo is very splintery and last year he drove one in his mouth and made it bleed. These bamboo stakes are also pressure treated, two good reasons you don't want your doodle chewing them, so this year no bamboo. We just cut some limbs off of an overgrown beech tree and I am recycling them into stakes to use for my plants this year and hopefully they will be more doodle friendly.
Oops almost forgot why I was replying. Saplings or very thin branches woven together make a great trellis. This is not my handy work but you get the idea.
This is neat.
