Im not sure where to really start. We noticed Sophie was bleeding from her gums after playing over the holiday weekend with kids an another dog. we irrigated and made sure nothing was stuck in there. Today we went to the vet to see if we missed anything. She found the purple marks all over her body and said she thinks her blood isn't clotting right and she is running a bit of a temp. We were transferred to the 24 hr emergency vet because they can do blood tests on site and she was worried about maybe rat or mouse poisoning. thank god they ruled that out right away with tests. the picture is all the tests they have done so far. Here is a list of things they found wrong and what they are doing to treat until more tests come back.

Bleeding from gums

red/purple spots over body

mild anemia

very few platelets

Sophie 10,000 platelets

normal 200,000 platelets

Treatment

steroids immunosuppressive does

doxycycline for possible tick bite infection

If anyone has any info that may help me out here on what is going on it would be very very appreciated or if you think I should post this in a specific or other areas to get the most responses let me know. Still kind of in shock that this is all happening.

Oh no... poor Sophie. I too am praying it is nothing serious and can be fixed with minimal treatment. (((HUGS))) to both of you.

Thinking of you all today

I'm so sorry to hear this about Sophie.  Hoping that the steroids work and Sophie is on the road to recovery.  Sending positive thoughts and prayers for her.

What kind of agricultural fields are nearby where you live or where Sophie was playing over the weekend?  I am asking because there is a type of anemia that can be caused from pesticides used in fields.  It can cause bleeding gums and bruising all over the body.  I had a sixth grade student that contacted this (at her old school) and spent a lot of time at Stanford University hospital with what was called a "precancerous" condition that was very rare.  Afterwards, her mother found out that another child in the same classroom had this same condition.  The school was in a beautiful area with strawberry fields all around it.  They moved!  In this day of Monsanto and GMO crops that are Roundup resistant, anything is possible.  If you live in an agricultural area, check out what has been used on the crops.  Dogs can pick up anything on their feet and then they lick their feet.  We live in a very agricultural area (Salinas Valley) and I am very pro-organic.  My son also had a reaction to some pesticides that were used on some ollieberries (sp?) in a "UPick" field behind my mom's house.  Some things to think about.

My Shih Tzu Dasiy had auto immune disease and she had the exact symptoms.  I noticed her gums were bleeding and when I gave her a bath prior to taking her to the vet I also noticed all red blotches.   I hope Sophie feels better real soon, sending you both doodle  {{{{{ hugs }}}}}}

Thinking of you guys today..hope Sophie is on the road to recovery, please keep us posted!

I hope things are getting better for Sophie and she is on the road to recovery
Sorry to hear you are going through all this with your dear Sophie. I hope it gets diagnosed and resolved soon.

What a scary ordeal.. It looks like Sophie is getting a really good work-up by your Vets.  I am hoping she will continue to respond to the steroids and that this condition will remain under control.  Best wishes and doodle hugs.

Holy cats, what a bill.. Hope she gets better!!!

My experience with ITP is with myself. Came on suddenly, very low platelets, bruising, bleeding gums. Steroids and a bag of platelets did the trick but it took about 2 weeks. Believed to be the spleens response to a viral infection ( the H1N1 flu). They said it might reoccur but almost 4 years later, no problem. Not sure if it is the same in dogs, but I understand how frightened you are and Skeet And I send you our prayers and hugs.

she was just given the flu shot but I think they did a test to rule that out. There have been so may tests its hard to keep them all straight.
