Im not sure where to really start. We noticed Sophie was bleeding from her gums after playing over the holiday weekend with kids an another dog. we irrigated and made sure nothing was stuck in there. Today we went to the vet to see if we missed anything. She found the purple marks all over her body and said she thinks her blood isn't clotting right and she is running a bit of a temp. We were transferred to the 24 hr emergency vet because they can do blood tests on site and she was worried about maybe rat or mouse poisoning. thank god they ruled that out right away with tests. the picture is all the tests they have done so far. Here is a list of things they found wrong and what they are doing to treat until more tests come back.

Bleeding from gums

red/purple spots over body

mild anemia

very few platelets

Sophie 10,000 platelets

normal 200,000 platelets

Treatment

steroids immunosuppressive does

doxycycline for possible tick bite infection

If anyone has any info that may help me out here on what is going on it would be very very appreciated or if you think I should post this in a specific or other areas to get the most responses let me know. Still kind of in shock that this is all happening.

I'm thinking this is good news...still so many unanswered questions but she's not getting any worse and she's eating and acting normally.  We're still crossing fingers and paws.

I don't see how the breeder would have known since puppies are not routinely x-rayed. I doubt this would even be caught on a routine spay. The breeder should be informed and perhaps reimburse you for any costs related to this congenital problem should problems ever arise. I hope they never do. This is the kind of thing found incidentally or if their is a renal problem.

Hi Bob,

I was just popping in to see if you had any new information today.  I would echo what has already been said about her having only one kidney, let your breeder know but it is very unlikely that something like this ever would have been discovered.  When I was pregnant with my daughter they picked up a problem with her kidneys on the ultrasound, I was told in speaking to them that it is amazing how many people only have one kidney and may go most of their lifetime without knowing it because there is never cause to look.

Are they classifying this as IMT at this point or they have not reached that conclusion?  Not sure since it appears they gave you literature about this.  It does most commonly occur in females 4-5 years old but there are stand out cases.  My friend's doodle girl was only 18 months old, the diagnosis came very slowly because they did not suspect this based upon her age and the textbook information they were aware of.  My friend kept very detailed notes about the entire situation.  This case is especially close to my heart because my friend was also one of our guardian moms and her beloved doodle with IMT was her second that we gave to her as a gift.  We have all since thrown ourselves into much research trying to understand.  As I mentioned earlier with proper identification and early treatment this can be resolved.  If we can help to share any information with you please feel free to contact me.  I will continue to keep you and Sophie and all of her care givers in my prayers.

Yes, I was very curious also.  Glad to hear she is doing well.  Keep us informed.

Thinking about you and praying you get answers.  I definitely would let the breeder know about the kidney;   reputable breeder  want to be aware of these congenital issues.  Please keep us posted.

new update. she is still eating and drinking and going potty and all around happy go lucky Sophie. The nurse that has been on since 6 pm has not noticed any bleeding from her mouth or anywhere new which I think is great news. That means she is starting to clot and I guess her platelet count will start to go up. They are waiting on a few more tests for some tick borne illnesses and they should be back tomorrow but more then likely it is just a odd fluke that this happened. I did send the breeder a few emails earlier today about everything that is going on and they are checking with their vet. She has a lot of people pulling for a quick recovery. Again thank you for all the positivity it has kept me relatively sane through all of this.

**Like**  :)

Bob -

Hope Sophie makes a qiuck and full recovery.  Please keep updating.

well as of today here platelet levels are back up to 100,000 and she is coming home. I will know more about everything they tested for when matt comes back with her and can update on that later. I can not wait to see my little fluff monster.

That is wonderful news!!!

So glad to hear this! I hope she stays well!

Sorry for the long space between updates. Sophie is still doing about the same as Thursday when she came home. still eating and drinking normally but a little mopey. I think that is from all the medication. She goes to the vet tomorrow to have checkup blood work to see if her platelets are back to normal. Once I get the results from that I will put out another update on where we need to go from there.
