I was walking DerbyDoodle this afternoon, and on my neighbors drive was a full sized male deer.
Man, did I take a double take. He was standing quite still...and his antlers were fuzzy and looked immature ...as if they were growing
I prayed DerbyDoodle. Didn't make a sound or freak out when she saw him..she did neither, but here's the kicker.....how dangerous are they? Could he have charged us? Think you have a tic problem....we have at least a dozen living in the small wooded area near our house. That's why I a.m. In con flight over using a flea/ tic preventative

My understanding is that most of the danger is when your car hits them.  Other than that, I think they are timid.

Cathy K- your story is incredible!  when you said fresh venison, I got concerned!  but re-reading-I got it!

And I thought Deer Tick come mostly from Rodents, not Deer
They are found on deer and certain mice.
Ahh thank you

Just last night, a neighbor told me that she had taken her dogs walking at a nearby forest preserve yesterday, and after returning home, discovered two ticks on one of the dogs. She had never seen a tick before; neither have I.

My very first post on DK was I found a tick on Spud. I put out an URGENT MESSAGE! I then rushed Spud to the vet :) I think the DK community was laughing at me
In all my days, I had never seen one either

No, they were thinking what a lucky dog Spud was to have a mommy that worried about him.

Ticks gross me out.  Aeons ago as a vet tech there were three things I had difficulty handling: abscesses (smell) anal glands (again smell) and ticks (because....EEWWWW)

Here was my original discussion < embarrassing>

Thank you, Marnee

awwwwww "but my handsome dog has this hole in his head"

Joanne, the GROSSEST thing I had to deal with was a HUGE bot fly larvae we had to remove from the flank of a GSD.  It was literally the stuff of horror movies.

I had one tiny one on back of my tigh last summer after hiking with Charlie. Gross.... I was wearing jeans, too you know?

Charlie had none! I didn't know what to do, and had to ask my 18 year old son to get it out!! ( I went to PCP after to make sure whole thing was out.) Yuck. We should spray tick reperant as well if we are going to the woods to hike...

what about Lyme vaccine, Karen?
