Well...Bexter apparently decided to snack on a sock.  I have no idea how or when this happened, although I tell my husband it did not happen on my watch!  Really, I am pretty sure it probably happened when my older son gets home from school & before I get home, but really no idea.  Anyway, I had no idea until my husband texted me when I was at work telling me that Bexter had vomited in his crate & rubbed his nose raw getting the crate tray out, which he succeeded in doing.  Poor little guy didn't want to be in his own vomit.  When my husband inspected the vomit (sorry, gross), he found part of a sock.  The important word there was PART of a sock.  Meaning that the rest of it was still in there.  So...I left work immediately, took him to our vet which of course was getting the X-ray machine replaced at that precise moment.  So, we had to take him to the ER vet which took an X-ray and found a foreign object to be lodged in Bexter's belly.  Of course, I said yes to the operation.  Turns out, he had a sock stuck in his belly.  Luckily, it wasn't in his intestines yet or that would have been a lot worse.  I am very upset about all of this.  My Bexter now is wearing the Cone of Shame because he tends to want to lick on his incision site.  He is doing great otherwise.  We will now have baby gate put at the foot of the stairs so he can't go upstairs without me.  I am sooo grateful for pet insurance right now!  By the way, Maggie is so awesome.  She can sense that something is wrong with Bexter, so she hasn't even attempted to play with him at all since he's been home.  She is the best dog I've ever seen in my life.

Tough lesson for Bexter but actually great one for the kids.  I'm sure they feel bad for this poor guy and will be better about keeping things off the floor.  I'm glad you were able to respond quickly and that everything turned out okay, and especially love hearing about "Nurse Maggie".

Glad you caught it in time.  Wishing Bexter a speedy recovery and an abstinence from socks.

So sorry for all you went through and poor little Bexter who doesn't realize socks are not appitizers!  Sounds like Maggie is one precious Doodle and will be right there for Bexter.  Hugs to all of you and hope things settle down now!  Yay for pet insurance:)

I am so glad Bexter is ok and Nurse Maggie is on hand to make sure things run smoothly during his recuperation :)

Another endorsement for pet insurance and more importantly, a happy ending with the belly all cleaned out.  Hope Bexter is all better real soon so he and Nurse Maggie had get to playing again!  Bexter-no more socks!

OMD! I am so sorry for all of you! Thank goodness they were able to retrieve the sock from Bexter's stomach.

He is one talented doodle to get that tray out of his kennel while he was in it. Impressive skills.

Good girl, Maggie!  I am glad she is being gentle with her poor brother.

I am so sorry.  All you can do is be as vigilant as you can, but no one can protect either their pets or their kids with 100% accuracy.

Thanks, everybody.  Bexter is acting pretty much back to his old self.  He is not even messing with his incision site, which was a worry for me.  Almost done with pain meds and antibiotic.  The kids do feel terrible about what happened and I have noticed they are really trying extra hard to be tidy.  It was so scary!

Bonnie - I still have no idea how in the world Bexter managed to get that tray out of the bottom of his crate.  All I know is that it was out and his nose was so red and raw.  It looked terrible!  He just has a scab on it now.  I am amazed at how quickly it is healing.

Whatever happened that day had to have scared Maggie out of her wits.  She is so sensitive.  Her crate is directly across from Bexter's (so they can see each other) and it took a whole day for us to even get her back in the office at all (where the crates are).  She was traumatized.  I felt so terrible for her.  Now, all is pretty much back to normal.  Yay!

Yay from us too! So happy to hear the healing is going smoothly.
