I'm wondering which is better, the harness or collar? And which brand is best to start with. I can't imagine putting a harness in the puppy every time we go out during the night. He'll have to have one on as our room is off the front yard and no fence in front yard. I don't want to spend to much b/c I know that he'll prob grow out of this first one quickly. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks!

I wouldn't use a harness just for night potty's.  For walks, yes I prefer them at least for my little devil.

We were lucky, potty before bed and she's always made it all night in the crate (whew).

I just use a leash too.  However, we live out in the country and Millie is doing great with her recall, so I haven't even been putting that on her lately.  She's been coming in every time after I say her name once (knock on wood).

For potty we don't bother with the harness but for walks we use an Easy Walk harness. We just bought her the large size so this should work for a while. We may eventually use a gentle lead. You see a lot of goldens & labs on gentle leads. They seem to have a need to always be in the lead. Penny has that golden tendenncy.

Not sure how big your guy is at this point, but we have the ex-pen sit up outside and that is the potty spot.  So if AnnaBelle needs to go out during the night I just carry her out put her in the ex-pen let her do her thing, pick her up and back in we come.  No leash etc to worry about.

I used the harness in the beginning.  one I bought at walmart and it was a size small.  (adjustable) and our pup was 8.5 pounds when we brought him home.  I thought it was kinder to his neck to use the harness in the beginning as we worked out being on the leash in the beginning. He actually got used to standing still while I put the harness on as I removed it every time we went outside. 3.5 weeks later, we use a collar most of the time, but when I know he is 'acting' out, I put the harness on. He thinks it is a fun game to run ahead and eat grass and sticks, so when I want to remain in control, I use the harness. I am trying to work on me leading the walks around the yard and not him. (since I know he will be large soon) :)

We bought a small Easy Walk for our 10 week old. Even if it only fits him for a couple of months it's worth the cost. I fully expect to be buying 2 more sizes, and that is ok! It is gentle on him and he sits still for me to put it on and take it off.

CUTE!

We have always used a wide, flat collar for Luna.  No clue what brand it is - it was a $7 collar from Petsmart (probably their brand) and it still fits her since it was adjustable!

We used a regular flat collar and a leash at first to keep Stanlee close by but that didn't last long as we are lucky enough to have a very large fenced in yard so nighttime potty breaks were a breeze.

For potty, I just use his collar...

When we do walks, I do a harness.  Salvador pulls too much on walks for me to feel comfortable using a collar (though we are working on it) and he doesn't seem to pull nearly as much with his harness.

Thanks so much! What about a slip lead for night time potty breaks?
