We took Quincy to the local Farmer's Market this morning-his first trip.  I think he was disappointed because a car ride usually means the dog park!  He was raring to go when we got there and wanted to check out all the other dogs and sniff all around.

We saw a beautiful and very regal standard black poodle who was in a sit position, with his owner holding him on a taut prong leash.  The space for us to walk by was narrow and would bring you within a foot or so of the poodle.  Well-Quincy would have no part of that!  He sat down and was not going anywhere near Pepe Le Pew!  The poodle owner told me that his dog is very dominant!  I guess so-Quincy spotted his 'tude from the get go and was having no part of it!  We had to walk around another way.  I remember Karen stating that dogs communicate in many ways.  I am glad Quincy seems to be reading his fellow canines and now knows who to steer clear of!

Interesting!

I can see this...the snobby uptown standard poodle not wanting anything he deems below him to walk by. Quincy was smart in not wanting to be involved. :)

Quincy knows trouble when he sees it, LOL!!  Way to go Quincy.

Rooney will often sit and refuse to walk past certain dogs. Most of the time I can tell it is a question of dominance and how Rooney is feeling about that other dog. Occasionally though, it is a playful move where Rooney will wait until the other dog is walking by and then he will try to playfully jump toward them to engage them (but I have him on leash so he doesn't get far). Most of the time though, it is definitely because he is submitting in some fashion to the other dog.

The funny thing is that we have had a couple of stand-offs when the owner of the other dog will make their dog sit to let us pass by-obviously as part of training- and I will have to tell them that there is no way Rooney will walk by their dog sitting or not. We usually end up both just giving each other a wide berth as we try to get our dogs to move along. It's kind of funny. :)

Maybe it was the crown (invisible to humans, but visible to dogs) on Pepe's regal head that gave Quincy the clue!!  :)

Isn't this the second poodle that Quincy doesn't like?.....Maybe he's prejudiced????  LOL

I forgot about that!  That was also a poodle with a bit of an attitude!  the lab genes sure mellows out the dog!

Quincy is a good judge of attitude, lol!

Trav went through a stage where he would lie down when he saw another dog coming.   He would rather be dragged than get up, until he could hopefully bounce up right into the dog's face.  It was so embarrassing!   Glad that behavior didn't last too long!  Nudging him in the rear end broke his fixation, but it didn't occur to me to do that right away.  lol

Quincy is one smart dood, able to spot trouble in the road that way!

Milton constantly lies down in wait of upcoming dogs, so he can attempt to engage them in play!  This is still going on at 15-months.  In some ways, it is adorable, but sometimes the owner takes it as a form of aggression until I call out to him or her!

I think it's awesome that Quincy picked up on the other dog's queues...perfect communication.

Good for Quincy and how smart he is:)
