Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Picked her up this weekend and we love her already. To us, she is the cutest thing in the world. F1a goldendoodle. First dog I have ever had so saying I'm excited is an understatement. So fun, good temperment (fingers crossed) and sleeps non-stop. Pretty good on going "potty" with just a couple accidents but we think she knows to hold it until she's outside, just sometimes our fault that we're not taking her out at the right time.

Only negatives that we're working on and are more than open for advice from you all is...first, she wont stop following us which I guess is normal from what I've been reading. I tried to shower this morning and she was just howling because she couldn't see me. She has to be near us and can not be alone (it has only been two days), but don't want her to become too attached to us and get depressed when we leave, if you know what I mean.

Second is that she barks here and there (nothing horrible but we have very, let's say "not nice" neighbors that we are worried that they are trying to get us booted). She yips and whines a little when we put her in her crate to sleep, which is right next to our bed so she can see both of us and she barks when we're not paying attention to her like when I was making breakfast this morning. We have been just grabbing her snout and saying "no" very firm but I'm reading that maybe that's not the best idea. Please give us any advice you can about the barking because we are honestly worried about our neighbors (we live in an apartment for another month). What worked in your experience?

Trying our best to introduce her to people and meet other dogs and follow advice from this website.

What a cutie. She is doing all the normal puppy things and you will find all sorts of advice here. Have you joined the  Puppy Madness group.

my Derby is 6.5 m.o. She got past the following  around as far as the shower face2face..probably by 5 mo. I remember someone once on DK said early on to me the potty for humans has never been a solitary thing since she got her Doodle...i just close the door now & i make perfectly sure there is nothing for her around to get into trouble with when i do.

I am told, the poodle part of them allows them to be more independent dogs...mine is an F1b so more poodle than..she is very independent , but b/c she is still puppyish she wants to be where i am. I did early on throw a few treats in her crate when i left..just a few times..she got the message quickly.  That is one of the great things about doodles they are soo smart!! she was always in a  smaller area when not crated & always on a leash...this was the program i used: Potty, short freedom, crate..or no potty, back in crate..housebreaking was a snap that way.

everything that was said about repetition is all about a dog's life...i always used the word "jackpot" for pooping..and she does do it pretty much instantly when i remember to use it now. I really don't need to prompt her any more..no more treats either for potty breaks.

The "word signals" came in very handy when we were in NYC @ 4.5 mo and had no grass to go on..the command made up for the lack of grass..if you follow my path here.

Barking has never really been a big issue..but again i use a word command for that...a word in another language & she definitely recognizes its meaning!

i want to really be so sincere here..i have been in your shoes. although Derby wasnt my first dog..my last puppy was 17 yrs ago..it was all new b/c so much has changed in training & i am older.  They change quickly, but b/c we are watching it 24/7 so, its seems slower paced than it really is.  They do mature out of some pesky habits, but really training and consistency in whatever you are doing with her is most important.

mine is at boot camp now..b/c i wanted some of her independence toned down...and wanted her obedience training to be spot on..i would like her to become a therapy dog..therefore she needs to become less excitable, and training camp is doing that.

She is doing fabulous at the training and getting well socialized there...We are anticipating here return in one more week.

Good luck with Navy....she is adorable

She is SO cute!!
She's very very young yet and going from being surrounded by siblings and mom 24/7 to being an only dog is a huge adjustment - just let her settle in for a while.
Great advice given already about just distracting her when she barks or chews etc., and exercise is your best friend - will do wonders!
Also, when you leave her by herself for a while and then return to her, don't make a big deal of it, keep it very calm and low key, (both leaving her and returning). If you're relaxed about it then she'll be more relaxed about it (remember you're now her pack leader!) and is she's less likely to suffer from separation anxiety.

Thank you for your advice, it really helps. We plan on putting our pup in a "boot camp" later on too, not set on it but leaning towards do it. Please let me know how that goes.

Navy is beautiful ! Congratz on your new doodle pup!!
Congrats on your puppy! Enjoy her, they change so quickly and then you blink and they are six months old and the very puppy days are over.

So precious!

Oh she is so precious!

What a sweet face!!  Congrats on your new sweetie!
