tired puppy???

This is just one of those random posts...

So, I've read on here a lot that "A tired puppy is a good puppy."

I was having a discussion with a friend from church that I get Salvador together with her 5-ish year old border collie mix dog, Kip.  While the dogs were playing, Salvador did one of his spaz puppy runs around the play area.  I told her that at night he always does this after he's had a lot of my attention (usually about 1-1.5 hours of straight time-walk, brush, play, etc).  After this, I try to take a little "me" time (computer, read, tv, etc) and he flips out and does this puppy run...mostly because he is tired.  This is usually around 9:30-ish at night.  I usually go to bed around 11-12 at night.  We had a discussion that the tired-er he is the naughtier he seems to be and she concurred the same about her dog when he was under a year old. 

Does anyone else experience this?

Yes, Sarah! When Owen was a puppy he would get very naughty when tired. I put him in his crate for a nap when this happened. The 9:30 PM running around the house may be something different. On DoodleKisses this behavior will often be referred to as "the zoomies". They do grow out of it, although our very high energy dog is almost three and he will still on occasions of great excitement give us a round of zoomies. Our two doodles have an evening wrestle. I'm not sure why but they are pretty consistent about their "after dinner wrestle". Before the doodles, we had a pair if Goldens and they did the same thing. Enjoy that cute pup of yours!

I do enjoy him!  Just the naughtiness/spazzing is like "argh!!"  He is a good pup, except from like 9:15 to 9:45 at night.  :)

We find that Sophie turns into her mischievous self when she is not tired.  She has too much energy and doesn't know what to do with it and starts zooming around the house.  When she plays with our friend's dog - it usually tires her out and she will ker-plunk on the floor and be calm while we are reading/watching tv, etc.   When she has not been on a walk because of excessive summer heat - I feel that she is ornery and gets into trouble.

I think these are two separate things.  Getting lots of exercise and play time equals a tired dog that comes inside and lays down and quietly chews on a toy and doesn't decide to destroy the sofa or an area rug.  When they haven't exhausted that puppy energy they take it out on other things, much of the time that equals chewing.  An over tired puppy (normally around 8:00pm ish) is a toddler ready for bed.  Even if you don't go to bed at that time I would put him in his crate, turn off the light and shut the door.  We have a 4.5 month old puppy (our 3rd doodle) and I've seen this with all of them.  If AnnaBelle gets the crazy zoomies she goes in her crate and she normally lays down and goes right to sleep.  She goes to bed at night right around 9pm and she sleeps through until I get her up.  Usually somewhere between 6-7 am.   She will occasionally have a case of the zoomies in the morning as well.

Salvador doesn't try to destroy things, he just starts grabbing things, nipping a little and jumping on the couch.  The  taking things away, telling him no bite, and removing him from the couch is usually what starts the spaz running.  This happened even yesterday, after playing with a doggy friend for an hour, walking for a half hour, a long petting and brushing, and a playing fetch session.  then naughtiness, being told no, spaz run around the house, and then pass out before 10.  He is 6 months old too.  his bedtime/crate time has moved from 9 pm until I go too bed.  He sleeps through the night, and I don't believe that I have ever seen him have his spaz run at any other time of the day...

Chachi is similar. He's 14 weeks old, sleeps a lot still and from what the breeder told me puppies can sleep 20hrs a day. When the kids interrupt his nap time, he gets a little crabby and starts to jump around and gets nippy. Next thing we see him out cold. Picture shows how he fell asleep one day after his crazy time.

My 6 month old golden doodle, Bogey, is most active in the evenings but the funny thing is that he puts himself to bed between 9- 10:00. He can be crazy from 7:00-9:00 but then will suddenly just get up, walk into the bedroom and get in his crate even if we are still up. He then sleeps through the night.

Salvador is 6 months as well, and has never put himself to bed.  He passes out usually close to me, but never chooses to go to his crate on his own (except if there's a toy in there that he may want)!
