I am looking for a sturdy ground cover for my back yard (read trample proof) some shade, some full sun. I live in East Bay, Northern California. I am a transplant from the U.K. and need desperate help getting to know some good/safe plants. I love gardening, but I am being beaten by snails and slugs, would also like to know some recommendation for products to use that are safe for Doodles and grandchildren :-)

I like Periwinkle. Very hardy. I also live in N CA--Sacramento. It grows just as well at our lake house in the high sierra desert.

Love the idea of periwinkle. Thanks for the suggestion. I think Livermore and Sacremento have had a few hot days :-)

I can second the comment that this is VERY hardy.  It even grows up here in Ontario, Canada north of NY where the Winters are 6 months long and the Summers get up to over 110 degrees!

My mom has a huge grove of it in her back yard and it does very well.

Thanks for the links Tina. The stepables link was great! I have bookmarked the ASPCA link for future reference while planning and planting.
We have a "taster" of the garden and we have to watch him all the time. Hoe old are you dogs. Mine is ten months so I am hoping he will grow out of the chewing thing.
Tina, How brave are you to get another puppy :-) We are still having to work very hard on commands and have good and bad days. Recall outside of the home is awful :-) But he is so cute I must admit I could be tempted to get another puppy.....just not sure my husband would agree :-)
Wisteria and large ornamental grasses as Wiggens passion at the moment, and of course any twig he can find. II am keeping a good look out for any seed pods on the Wisteria as I believe they can be very bad for our puppies.
Our heat in Livermore got to 105-108..... Which was great for the grape growers and wineries here :-) but I was not a happy girl.
Just planted my Periwinkle under the trees. Looks a little sparse, so I went back to the garden center for some more.......wouldn't you know it!! They had sold out! :-( I guess I will have to have some patience and wait for it to grow and spread :-)
Any helpful hints on safe flowers for containers that get direct sun 6 or more hours a day. I have the "taster" doodle. :-)
