I've tried tethering but I would have to do it all day which I don't want to do! He pulls everything off the counter including dish towels, raw cookie doh, placemats or anything that is not pushed against the back of the counter. I heard of puting double sided tape on the counter edge... Any other suggestions??

Another suggestion is to put cookie trays on the edge of the counter with silverware (maybe spoons only)  on the cookie sheet. When the dog gets the edge of the cookie sheet it falls off and makes lots of scary noise. Adina, used an e-collar, giving a correction when Rosco countersurfed. I think she successfully curbed Rosco's counter escapades.

Dear Jaxon,

Only countersurf once in a while for really good stuff (like bread and hot dog buns in the package). If you only do it once in a while they will NEVER catch you.

Your Buddy,

Ned

Sadie actually did this accidentally (she knocked an enormous brass tray onto the floor and it made a LOT of noise) and more or less completely cured herself of counter surfing. For a while she would run away if I showed her the tray.

I have lost loaves of bread, hamburgers the other day. I am terrible, because it is my older lazy one that does it so it makes me happy to see him ornery again. I do love the cookie sheet idea!

I did successfully curb things until we let down our guard and Boca showed him the coast was clear again.  So...again, like all training, without a reminder or perfectly keeping things off counters forever and for always, it doesn't stick forever--especially when sister doodle demonstrates that he was imagining things before and it is PERFECTLY SAFE to steel toast off the table when Momma goes back to the kitchen to get something else.  Boca will do it almost in plain site--she has no shame.;

I have heard also of a tin can with pennies inside and a little peanut butter on it--the crash of the can spooks them--but some dogs are fearless in which case, you should use the collar Adina used--you will probably need it for more than countersurfing if you have a fearless dog....

I have a little doodle, but his legs are long and he can surf the front portion of counters.  If I can't keep them uncluttered, I use gates to keep the dog from the area.

I've heard of people placing duct tape loops on the edge of the counters sticky side up, and setting a trap by purposefully putting something there he would normally surf for then letting him get "stuck". But if these methods didn't work I'd go with the e-collar method :-)

What exactly is an e-collar?

Squirt guns work for some dogs.  Paws on counter - I get sprayed - rats, what else can I find to get into....

I think Jaxon would think that I was playing if I sqirted him lol!

:)

Can you install a baby gate? A lifesaver in our home for many many reasons. Ours is between the kitchen and the livin room.
Honestly, you get used to not leaving things on the counter. Cleaning up right away is just part of having a dog. In all our homes it happens though. Spud gets cat food constantly and I give up on dish towels. For the towels I have installed higher hooks but he thinks they are a soft dog toy. Now it just makes me laugh.
Squirt bottles, with a firm 'no' helps but dogs will be dogs
