I'm sorry to hear this..
I'd forget the Hill's food, it's garbage anyway and contains nothing of any therapeutic or medicinal value. They generally don;t want to eat when they are nauseated, so don't push it, as long as she's taking fluids. With this much vomiting, there's a danger of dehydration. I'm surprised the vet didn't give her sub Q fluids while she was there.
Instead of the Hill's, boil some white meat chicken, cut it up finely, and offer her small amounts of a mixture of 50% chicken/50% mashed cooked sweet potatoes or plain white rice. That will be easier on her stomach and much better for her than the Rx crap. But don't push it. if you tempt her into eating when she doesn't feel like it, she may vomit again, which will just make matters worse.
I'd watch her closely, it does sound like she could have a piece of plastic or some other indigestible object in her gut. Is she pooping normally?
Please keep us posted. Hopefully it will pass.
is she actually vomiting up solids or just gagging with liquid coming out?
I have trouble with Toby just gagging up "bile" yellow stuff. Nothing different with his food, but it happens mostly when I can't take him with me in the car. In Indiana, it can be too hot, and he doesn't get that. :-)
I leave the TV on the station I watch alot, and a light of course, thinking that having his house sound like it is supposed to would help him. I'm thinking separation anxiety. I don't work, but I do have to leave the house occasionally. Sometimes he does it while I'm gone, and other times waits til I get home and he tries very hard to wait til he gets out the door.(I have laminate, no big deal). Does anyone know anything more about this? Thanks
Mary, I think that's a separate issue from the one being discussed here. I don't think that's a health or illness issue but rather behavioral. You might want to ask that question in the main forum or in one of the groups dealing with behavioral issues, separation anxiety, etc. We don't want to hijack this discussion about someone's sick doodle.
I can't add anything to Karen's advice but I hope she is feeling better soon. Please keep us posted.
I had a similar incident with Camus, non-stop vomiting every 15 to 20 minutes. His vet did a complete workup, including x-rays. The diagnosis was gastritis. He was dehydrated, so electrolytes and potassium levels were off and he had slightly elevated pancreatic and liver enzymes. Luckily the x-rays showed no obstructions. He was given fluids and anti-emetics and put on a bland diet for a few days. Cottage cheese, potatoes, and boiled chicken. I was also told to feed him small meals 4x daily.
There is a bug going around here (DC area). This was sent out by my dog park association last week: "According to local vets and dog owners, there's been a spike in cases of doggy diarrhea, vomiting and intestinal problems. According to one area vet, "there is a lot of really bad diarrhea going around, even in dogs that don't go to dog parks." We've shared the diarrhea reports with the County and have not been instructed to take any action. While we don't know the source of the infection or how it is spreading, we can help keep our dogs safe by keeping our park as clean as we possibly can."
We participate in agility trials as well, and have seen an increase in sick dogs there, too.
Just FYI.
