Okay, this was absolutely awful. I was at work this morning when a neighbor of mine sent me this:
http://www.suntimes.com/22355920-761/dog-falls-43-stories-from-loop...
We live on the 40th floor of one of only two buildings on that block. There are thousands of people and dogs in these buildings, and new ones come and go all the time. Were they sure it was the 43rd floor? Could a maintenance person or the cleaning lady have left the door open? A million horrible scenarios went through my mind.
I rushed home, got upstairs and Lola was not there. I knew it was most likely because she was out with the dog walker but still it was such a long wait until they finally got back. I'm just so glad she is okay.
I don't know which of my neighbors' dog this was, but someone won't be so lucky. So devastating!

Your building? Must have been terrifying.
Yes, three floors up.
How scary. I am so glad you and Lola are ok. Maybe you can start a permanent "bring your dog to work day" or at least until this is figured out.
So scary! I am so glad Lola is safe.
The article must be updated from when you first read it. It sounds like a strange horrible accident coincidence.
You are a much more trusting person than I am, Deb. It sounds very suspicious to me. I hope you are right.
Ditto.
Yes, it was updated. In fact I was standing there when the reporters were interviewing him and heard every word - except the part about the police still investigated, which they must have found out separately. The article does not give a conclusion about how the dog went off, because there is no way to know. Not enough information to say at this point.
At least it was at only one person's apartment so Lola is probably safe.
I have to believe it was an accident. Otherwise, the guy would have to be a complete psycho to throw his own cat AND his family's dog off his balcony.
Maybe I watch too many crime dramas on TV, but if he blamed the cat's death on the dog, throwing the dog off the balcony is retribution.
Could be! I don't watch any TV so that might be my excuse. ;)
I thought about that, too - but now I don't think so. It sounds like there is a reliable witness that will confirm that he was not home when his stepdad and sister left the unit with the dog home and the balcony door open and did not return until after the dog fell. The poor woman is probably getting a million calls from reporters, etc., so I didn't want to bother her too. I will ask her in person next time I see her, though.
