I just took Bailey to play with her friend Rudy in his fenced yard.  I always unleash her and make her sit and wait about 10 feet outside the gate until Rudy's mommy opens the gate then I say "OK" and she runs into the yard to play.  Well...tonight she ran to the gate but about 3 feet shy of the opening she cut to the left and grabbed something from the ground and started to run away with it.  I yelled "LEAVE IT" and she stopped and dropped it and looked at me!!  I caught up with her right away as she had only gone a few feet from the gate and I saw that it was a disgusting dead bird crawling with ants!!!  Bless her heart that she responded so well..... I am so proud of her and thankful to everyone who has said how important the "leave it" command is!!!   Guess who is not going to be giving her mommy kisses tonight until teeth are brushed and face is washed??!!

Good dog, good training!

Good girl, Bailey!

Yep, a solid "leave it" command can be a true lifesaver. I've been grateful for it on more than one occasion.

Thanks Karen and F!  It means a lot coming from you guys!

Ewwwww! It's always so surprising when our fluffy/sweet/clean/cuddly dogs want to play with something dead and gross!

I know!  It is amazing what they are attracted to isn't it?

Good job! A solid leave it command is invaluable! Looks like you've got it!

Good Job Bailey and Mom!   This Doodle was listening in her training classes:)

Hooray for Bailey! Congrats on teaching the "leave it" command so well, Gail!

Thanks, Sue and Lonnie and Bonnie!  I must admit we work on the command often however....this is the first time I really needed her to leave something alone and drop it!!  :>)

I had the same feeling the other day. My mom was walking Brinkley when he dug into the brush and scooped up a full fried rancid chicken breast. I'm wondering if it was laced with something to hurt dogs (I've read about dog-haters poisoning food and leaving it where they don't want dogs). I was shocked that he dropped it when she gave him the command. Even if it wasn't poisoned it had bones, was fried and spoiled. Thank goodness for good listeners when it's most needed.

I never thought of poison food....yikes!  Glad Brinkley dropped the chicken (even though he probably loved the rancid smell)!  LOL!   I still can't get over what our dogs will stick their faces in!

And it stunk!! My mom bagged it and brought it home just in case Brinkley got sick and required a vet visit. Luckily he didn't.
