Are nuts bad for dogs? Pete got ahold of a bag of almonds and ate most of the bag.

Deb, don't you just love it when they get into things they are not supposed to?! ;0). So sorry! Here's what I found online from the vpi pet insurance toxic food list:

"Dogs love the taste of almonds, particularly the flavored variety (jalapeno, barbecued, smoked, vanilla, cinnamon, etc.).

While not toxic, almonds are not easily digested can give your dog an upset stomach and create gastric intestinal distress."

I also saw that they can potentially get pancreatitis which is treatable but needs to be treated immediately at the onset. I'd watch the little guy and just make sure he isn't showing any gastrointestinal symptoms and maybe call your vet of they are open on Saturdays.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info! I will definitely watch him. He weighs 65lbs and ate a small bag. Doesn't seem to affect him so far. He's happily chewing on his elk antler right now.
Are all nuts that way or just the almonds? I'm thinking any may have the same type of affect.

Nuts are extremely high in calories and fat...all nuts. That's why they can cause pancreatitis.

I have been giving Haley about 5-6 pecans a couple of times a week (when I grind his nails) for about a year now.  We have several pecan trees (one is over 200 years old) in our yard.  My previous do would shell and eat pecans at will when they were falling off the trees.  Haley tries to do so but after he ate the rock years ago I do discourage him "shelling" his own.

I am going to possibly shock a few people here and say that pecans are too good for dogs! Salted pecans are one of my absolute favorite foods in the world, and they are almost impossible to find here in my area. There is one store that carries them, and they cost $16/lb., or one dollar per ounce. Sorry, Haley, but I'm going to try to talk your mom into selling those pecans to me instead of giving them to you!

I am shocked! I will end you salted pecans we have them here! It would be my pleasure! Pm me your address!

Thanks, Jen, that's very kind of you, but please don't spend your $ on me! As long as they are still available here, I don't mind paying for them; if I can spend a thousand dollars a year on chicken breast for JD, I can buy myself some pecans once in awhile. I eat them sparingly because they are so high in calories (Ten calories in one pecan half!), so they last a long time.

But if the store here ever stops carrying them, I am going to take you up on that. :)

Deal! I can pay you in pecans for all your advice! If they make that many pecans!

I am shocked too. If it's good enough for me and not bad for the dogs I share things sparingly : )

Not the worst but not the best.
