I read this recently....... The  US Department of Agriculture has given permission for chicken products processed in the People’s Republic of China to be sold in the United States without labeling that would indicate where the chicken products came from.  The chickens will be slaughtered in the U.S.  or  Canada,  then shipped to China for processing and re-export.

Initially, the companies will be allowed to export only cooked poultry products from birds raised in the United States and Canada.  But critics predicted that the government would eventually expand the rules, so that chickens and turkeys bred in China could end up in the American market.

Then I just ran across this...

This week, police in China's Xi’an province reported that they had found and seized more than 22 tons of fake beef at a local factory. Get this: the “beef” was actually made from pork (which is considerably cheaper than beef) that had been treated with chemicals including paraffin wax and industrial salts to make it look like it came from a cow.  Shanghiist reports that the factory sold more than 1,500 kilos (3,000 pounds) of the fake beef to local markets at around 25 to 33 yuan ($4 or $5) per kilo. Six workshops that were producing the fake beef have been discovered and shut down.

This isn’t the first instance of fake meat being sold in China. In May of this year,  Medical Daily reported that 904 people were arrested in China for “meat-related offenses” over three months at the beginning of 2013. Included in these arrests was one gang of meat crooks who made over 10 million yuan ($1.6 million) by selling rat, fox, and mink meat at markets. This makes us wonder what impostor foods we might be eating, which in turn makes us very, very uncomfortable.

Senator Schumer, NY, was on the news about this processed in China nonsense. Aside from poison etc., just how old will that chicken be be when it gets sold here. Really shameful.

Why?  For the love of God why??  I know, I know, GREED!  Taking the meat processing jobs off shore and then shipping back...who would even think of this.

It wouldn't' surprise me.  : (

This is so disgusting! I can't stand it.

gross gross gross!!!  ANything for a profit these days

I say we start a commune of DKers and grow/raise all our own food !!  Surely we have all the necessary talents with such a diverse group !!   Shall I start looking for an extremely large farm somewhere that is centrally located ?   Boy would the doodles ever have a great !!  :>)

Doesn't just need to be DKers.  It needs to spread all over the place.  We try to buy local fruits and veges at fruit stands and at the farmer's markets and also grow a lot of our own food.  It is great having and taking care of a garden.  I took out our potatoes and planted milkweed for the butterflies (and planted more potatoes).  I feel sorry for the butterflies and bees.  The rosemary plants are full of flowers and bees so I didn't cut them back yet.  I even felt guilty today when I was cutting back the dahlias and there was a big spider sack with eggs that I took off of the deck bannister and threw in the green waste container.  The mother spider came out and was glaring at me pulling off her sack of eggs.  Can you believe I felt guilty?  What is happening to our natural world?

No more chicken at our house. Vegan diets are looking better and better all the time.

Wow/and you know our worst suspicions will come true
YUK!! What's the solution?
I don't cook anymore ....

I only buy organic chicken -have been for a while.

Me, too, Allyson. We have been eating only organic meats, veggie and dairy products for years. Now we have moved and they are not as readily available where we are, but worth the effort.

Oh yeah, it is already here.  Twice recently, I had soup at a Vietnamese restaurant and they had this terrible meat in the soup.  The first was fish that had been processed, compressed, and then frozen.  They would take this meat and then put a piece in the soup.  The next time, it was chicken - same thing, processed, compressed, frozen, and then shipped to the US.  I did not want to go back there, but Charlie likes the restaurant so we went again this week but I got snow peas and mushrooms over chow mein noodles.  It wasn't bad.  You definitely can be wondering what you are eating these days!  Can't be too careful.  And remember, if they put melanine in baby food, what do you think they can be putting in pet foods.
