Maggie got spayed on Thursday and has not been herself since. She just lays in one spot all day and wont move unless you move her.  She eats and drinks fine but I have to put it in her bed with her.  When I take her outside to go potty she darts quickly then stop then darts again on three legs with one of her hind legs trying to scratch her sutures... It takes her 15mins to finally go potty and its sad to watch..  When she is done I carry her back into the house and she darts to her bed and doesn't move till i move her or take her out again...  Her sutures line does not look infected or red but she freaks out if you touch it.. Also she has been on pain meds. since the surgery but she got her last one this evening.  Anyone else have there doodle act like this..  I am going to call the vet in the morning to see what she says...

what's going on ?

Something is hurting her . Could they have sutured a nerve?
She needs to be seen.

I am so glad you are going to the vet. This is not normal four days after surgery.

That does not sound 'normal' at all. 4 days after Lucy's spay she was running up and down the stairs (I know, it was against doctor's orders, but it was difficult to prevent). I hope the vet can figure out what's wrong with Maggie.

Poor Maggie.... something's not right, she should be improving every day and be herself by now.  I would take her to the vet ASAP.  I hope she is feeling better real soon.

I would call the Vet too.  let us know what they say or if they have you bring her in.

That being said.  While Trixie did not need to be carried after she was spayed.

She was very skittish & Jumpy- Kind of like you described.  She would get up - Then rush forward like something scared her & then look at her backside.  She too was on pain pills longer then most dogs.

I think it took her a good week or more to feel better & still was skittish like that here & there for maybe a few weeks.

Trixie is Very sensitive to pain.  I have never had a dog so sensitive to pain.

I hope Maggie feels better soon.

Ouch ! I'll bet it is the sutures are pulling as they dry and start healing. Finnley acted very quiet and jumpy when she did get up after her spay and her umbilical hernia repair. It took about a week to get into the groove of doggy life again. You know your pup though, and if it doesn't seem right, call the vet !

hope she is better today!

Jeannine, I am hoping to hear that Maggie is doing much much better today. Looking forward to news about what the vet said and did. hugs and doodlekisses

Its true that some dogs are more susceptible to pain. Lucy breezed through her spay. On the other hand, Oscar really had a hard time after his neuter procedure (but seemed to breeze through his abdominal surgery after his intestinal obstruction... go figure!). Still, Oscar seems much more sensitive to pain than Lucy. Maybe there is something to the theory that sutures can hit a nerve. I hope to hear Maggie is much better today and back to her normal self.

How is Maggie Mae doing today? Please give us an update when you can...

Took Maggie to the vet today and she is fine... She is just a drama queen...lol   Vet said sutures are fine and they are probably pulling on her and freaking her out...  She said Maggie is very talented in how she can walk/run on three legs and still manage to get her back paw up and under her belly to her incision site..  She has a rash on her belly from scratching.  She gave me some Gentocin topical to rub on her belly and around her incision but not on her incision to try to alleviate the itching... I also have to keep her wrapped up with an ace wrap and a non stick gauze at all times so she cant lick or scratch and irritate her skin/ incision..  She is still for the most part staying in her bed or where ever I put her but tonight when I came home from work she tried to get out of her bed but she pulled a stitch and ran back in and laid down :(   poor thing...
