I have changed Josie's dog food to Pulsar's salmon from Horizon.  She just loves it. She is usually a grazer, eating a couple of mouth fulls through out the day. But when she got the new food she was gobbling it up. I had to take it away from her after a little while I didn't want her to upset her tummy. I am mixing it gradually with her previous dog food. Thanks for the recommended food lists. Josie appreciates it.

Updated to include a new brand Karen likes:  I and love and you.

Thanks Karen!

And thank you

It's an okay food, but you can do much better, although almost anything is better than Iams, lol.

Someone else asked about this food recently: http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup/forum/topics/spring-...

Updated to inlcude the new Blue Buffalo Wilderness recipes.  Thanks Sandy for letting me know - that helps me keep this updated.

OK - does anyone know anything about Nulo brand dry dog foods?  We have had an awful bout with pancreatitis in one of my dachshunds. (I know this isn't a doxie board - but still one of my babies!) Anyway - just got him out of the vet hospital after 3 days on IVs and antibiotics. Vet gave me canned ID food - which Pete won't eat. I cooked up a batch of chicken, rice, green beans and a bit of pumpkin. He scarfed that down.  Then I went to my doggie store (Hollywood Feed) and talked to the gal there.  The only dog foods that they sell are premium brands. She recommended Nulo, which I've never heard of. She says that like Fromm's they have never had a recall and are great for dogs with sensitive stomachs or a history of pancreatitis. It is only a minimum of 7% and a maximum of 9% fat content.

It's a very small company based in Austin TX with very limited distribution. Looks like a very good company

Thanks Karen.  Looked pretty good from what I read on the label and website. I'll give this a try for the doxies, but will leave the doodles on Fromm's - at least for now. They are doing well, and like it, so don't see any reason to change them.

I just realized the rest of my reply didn't post. I had also commented that Nulo doesn't make a grain free formula. But half the Fromm formulas contain grains also, so it should be fine.

The products that I use from Fromm aren't their grain-free formulas, either, so the switch should be ok. It is so hard to come up with just the perfect thing that is going to work on all of the dogs. I really didn't want to have to use different products for different dogs, but under the circumstances, looks like that's what I'll be doing. But that's OK.  Once we hit the "magic" product for each, it won't be a problem. The only problem is working through the process to find what is going to work for each. Right now, it looks like the doxies will use one product, and the doodles another. Hey - just using two different ones is great. Just hope all the doxies do well on the same one!

Karen.....I was at the Portland Pet Expo yesterday and there was a Nulo rep there who gave me a couple of samples.  I noticed that citric acid is listed as a preservative - and there's always the fear of bloat in the back of my mind and I know that I've seen citric acid thought to be a contributor.  Would this be an issue in this food?  Outside of that, I thought that the food sounded great.

According to the Purdue study on GDV in dogs, citric acid was a factor when the food was moistened before serving. There doesn't appear to be a risk from just the citric acid alone.

That said, it really isn't necessary; it's used along with tocopherols (vitamin E) as a fat preservative, and many of the better foods use mixed tocopherols alone.

There are many, many risk factors for bloat, and it would seem that the more of those factors that are present, the greater the risk, so if citric acid in the food is the only factor that applies to your dog, I wouldn't worry too much about that. Having animal fats in the first 4 ingredients is also a risk factor. Here's a link to an article from the Whole Dog Journal on this: http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/issues/8_1/features/15682-1.html

I had never heard of Nulo before. I like that the food is made in the USA from "domestic ingredients". On the downside, they don't appear to make a grain free formula.
