You are right, the Endurance formula in the Nulo Lifestyles line is grain-free. However, it's a formula designed for working dogs and athletes. The fat and calorie content would not work for the average dog.
It varies greatly from one dog to another and from one food to another. The general rule of thumb for calories is 20-25 cal per lb of bodyweight per day, more for working dogs, pregnant dogs, and puppies. It also depends on the dog's size; the larger the dog, the fewer calories per lb per day he requires (about 15 per lb of body weight), and the smaller the dog, the greater. The higher the calorie content per cup of a food, the less you feed to meet your dog's needs. I'd say most adult formulas contain between 350 and 460 calories per cup. LID and senior/weight loss formulas may have less. For dogs who are chowhounds and always seem hungry, you may want a food with fewer calories per cup so that the dog gets more food. For picky eaters, a food that is nutrient dense and provides more calories per cup might work better, as they can eat less to get the calories they need. Endurance contains 469 kcal/cup, which is slightly more than Orijen, and among the highest calorie contents I have seen.
If you look at the fat content of several dry adult foods, you usually see percentages ranging from a low of 10% (in a few LID or senior formulas) to 18% in Orijen. Endurance contains 20% fat, which I have never seen before. Since fat contains more than twice the calories per gram of either protein or carbohydrate, this would really only be appropriate for a dog who burns a lot more calories per pound of body weight than normal, and needs a food that is more calorie (energy) dense than the average dog. And since higher fat diets can contribute to pancreatitis and GI issues, it's better to keep it lower. Those of us whose dogs have GI issues are advised to stay below 15% fat. For normal healthy dogs with no GI issues, the 20% range is probably fine, but I'd be careful.
The human nutrition background does help with feeding dogs; we just have to adjust our mindsets on the macronutrients, lol. Higher protein & fat than people, lower carbs.
The vitamin & mineral requirements are surprisingly similar. A few differences, but not as many as you'd think.
Sadly, Karen and I decided to move Natural Balance to the bottom of the recommendations under the "items that look okay but we are worried about due to buyout" section. This is disappointing to us all.
Yes, the NB formulas are safe for the time being, but we can't recommend a product made by Del Monte.
When P & G took over Natura, (EVO, Innova, Calif. Naturals) it took two years for major problems to occur, so if you are feeding NB, don't panic.
And there are going to be cases where you have no choice but to continue feeding NB and just watching it closely, just like some people have had to do with the California Naturals. Both are still way, way better than the Rx foods, which might be the only alternative for some.
I am going to do my best to look for other novel protein, limited ingredient options in the meantime.
Thank you guys for updating..and also, thank you Karen for looking for other novel protein foods..you guys are amazing! Let me know if there is anything that I can do to help out
Thanks, Jill. If you see or hear of any new foods that appear to contain unusual single proteins (kangaroo, rabbit, even venison or duck) please let us know about them and we'll look into them.
Will do!
