This time I don't know the answer but that's often the case. Every year around this time hundreds of hickory nuts lay in wait to break my ankles. But this year a batch of giant round green ?nuts have fallen and I see the source. I have taken photos : ) I have an idea but I'm not telling. The picture below are hickory nuts with the big guy on the upper right being Mr. Mystery. . There will be a prize for the winner. I hope she doesn't live in Canada : ) It's hard to ship certain things there.

Hmmm...Walnut or Chestnut?
I'm voting chestnut, or maybe a kukui nut. However, there is a horse chestnut tree next door to me. The green shell has prickles on it though, but other then that it looks the same. I don't think the kukui nut has prickles though. Oh I don't know !
Well I never heard of a Kukui but since it grows in the tropics and has completely different leaves we'll nix that one. And most definitely not a horse chestnut either.
When I was a kid, my father would practically shout out "Horse Chestnut", with the accent on the wrong syllables every time we passed one. I never would have missed the big plumes of flowers and the leaves are all wrong too.
Good beginning.
I'm going with Black Walnut. :>)
Damn!!!! I said no one from Canada and I knew that you would stick your oar in. I think it is a walnut. Where the doodle did that come from. Tomorrow the hunt begins because I think I have more than one. This may make my fortune if I live another 50-100 years. I think the wood is very valuable : )
Eastern Black Walnut.
Yep, that would be my guess, too.
No the hickory nuts are much smaller as you can see in the picture and the leaves are very different.
