Any advice? – Does puppy has to stay over night after neutering?

Charlie went in for neutering this morning.  He has retained testicle so I’ve been told the procedures are a bit more complicated.  I just got a call telling me that he just came out of aesthesis and everything was fine, but they want to keep him overnight.  The Vet didn’t mention anything about overnight stay when I was dropping him off, and I was initially told that I can take him home today.  I’m going to go over to the clinic this afternoon to check up on him and see if I can take him home.  But does anyone know if it is normal after neutering?  I know there is going to be two incisions because of the retained testicles but I was reassured that it was routine and there will not be much risk.  Should I leave him over night (assuming the over night stay is supervised) or is it ok for me to take care of him at home?  Or maybe I’m just being too concerned and paranoid.  Any advice would help.  Thanks.

The overnight stays are rarely supervised at the average vet's office. Unless they have a good, specific reason for keeping him, and if you are comfortable keeping an eye on him tonight, I would take him home.

Thanks.  I just thought it was weird that I wasn't told this when I took him there and was reassured that it wasn't that much  more complicated or risky or whatever.  I'm fully prepared to not sleep and keep an eye on him all night, I'm sure the vet office is not going to do the same.

That is for sure. In addition to a simple Scotland incision he will have an abdominal incision. But unless he has complications I can' tree why he can't be home.

That is odd, if it is just a vets office and no one will be around in the overnight hours. Maybe they do have someone to keep an eye on 'patients'? Usually, if a vet suggests an overnight stay they have a good reason.

That's what I'm worried about, especially this one apparently doesn't open on the weekend and it's just ran by a husband/wife team (although they have been around my neighborhood for the last 30 years).  I'm suspicious of all vet now especially since the last one over charged me and told me some bogus lie about BB food and try to get me to buy the stuff they were selling at the clinic.

My Fynn is getting neutered in November and they already told me that they would keep him overnight. However the place is an 24hour animal hospital. I'm ok with it because I know the staff and everyone always pays great attention to both my dogs when I come in. So I would say it depends on how you feel about the staff.

I agree that if they are not going to supervise him overnight, he would be better off at home.

I would never leave my dog unsupervised after surgery. If they have staff staying that is okay, if not I would ask to bring him home and keep him in a quite, darken room and stay with him and check on him through out the night. They should let you know what to look for....checking gums, panting heavily and other stuff. Or ask for the cost of transferring to an over night emergency vets for them to monitor. Hope all goes well....these guys bounce back quickly :-)

When Pinot got Neutered, they kept him overnight as well. There were no complication, and I was told that he would stay over night from the beginning. He also went to the pre-surgery appointment to make sure everything was fine for him to go through with the procedure.

We just got Bentley neutered yesterday and he stayed overnight at the vet.  They do have someone there 24 hours and they wanted to monitor him to see if he would need a cone.  He came home today with his cone and it's been a nightmare of him trying to get the cone off.  And bc he smart (bc he's a doodle!) he figured how to bend the cone so he can lick his incision!  We are trying everything to get him to stop.

Charlie was doing the same thing so I got him one of those baby onesies, made some cut on the bottom for his tail, and it works like a charm. :)  He just got his follow up check this weekend and everything was good.  Good luck with your little guy.  He'll probably be mopping for a few days but will be back to normal in no time.
