Lucy Leaps to help the shelter dogs!

As many of you know, we adopted Lucy this past February. She was almost 4 years old and had been the breeders dog. She had had 3 litters of puppies including my Daphne. She was being retired from breeding and needed a forever home. My DH and I drove from Florida to Michigan in February to get her. She is such a sweet gentle soul and wants nothing more than to be loved on all day!

As a breeders dog, she really had not been trained at all. We started with "sit" and then "down". Daphne has been going to puppy class since she was about 12 weeks old. The trainer really likes the way she plays with puppies and asked us to come every week to help socialize the little ones. So when Lucy came home, she started going with us. After class we would work on Daphne's tricks and I tried to teach Lucy sometimes but she really seemed to shy away from things like "roll over" and "say please". When Daphne would practice jumping thru the hoop, Lucy seemed to really pay attention to the fact that Daphne was getting some really good treats. She wanted in on the action and so we started her off with a low jump. She is a mini but weighs 37 lbs so she never really gets the height that Daphne does.

When we found out about the Pet Trick contest that gives 10,000 Halo meals to shelter dogs, naturally I decided to enter Daphne. She loves to perform! They had both a video and a photo contest but there were many more people entering photos than videos so I decided to shoot a video of Daphne. On the last day of the entry, I thought, wouldnt it be nice if we could win both the photo & video contests for our local rescue? So really, as an afterthought, I took Lucy in the backyard and took a few photos of her jumping thru the hoop. Since I am technology challenged, I asked for help and Donna (&Quincy) came to my aid. She put together a photo collage and I quickly entered it in the contest. Jarka (Monty & Auggie) had also offered their assistance. (I really love my DK family!)

Imagine my surprise when I awoke this morning to look at the finalists and found Lucy's picture but no video of Daphne :-( There had been 355 photos entered and only 62 videos. Lucy is in the final 5 of 355! As I write this, I feel terrible for underestimating her so badly! I was really counting on Daphne bringing in the prize. But Lucy definitely deserves her chance!
