Butler Schein makes nine million products, is this the one the vet gave you? http://www.vetdepot.com/protegrity-gi-canine-probiotic-20-soft-chew...

Yes

See info I posted below. Horrible stuff.

Butler Schein Animal Health is a division of the Henry Schein company. You could try calling them to ask the source of the product, but you probably won't get anywhere as they do not sell directly to the public.

But if that is the product the vet gave you, I wouldn't use it no matter where it came from. It's filled with garbage and dangerous chemical preservatives:

Ingredients:
Skinless Chicken, Chicken Liver, Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Wheat Flour,
Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Phosphoric Acid, Salt, Potassium Sorbate and Calcium Propionate and BHA and
Citric Acid (Preservatives), Iron Oxide.

There are dozens of good probiotics on the market that only contain probiotics, not corn & BHA.

from the Dog Food Project Ingredients to Avoid:

Propylene Glycol

A colorless viscous hygroscopic liquid, CH3CHOHCH2OH, used in antifreeze solutions, in hydraulic fluids, and as a solvent.

Used as humectant in semi-moist kibble to keep it from drying out. May be toxic if consumed in large amounts, and should definitely not be an ingredient in a food an animal will eat daily for weeks, months or even years of its life. In countries of the European Union, propylene glycol is not cleared as a general-purpose food grade product or direct food additive.

BHA

Butylated Hydroxysanisole - a white, waxy phenolic antioxidant, C11H16O2, used to preserve fats and oils, especially in foods.

Banned from human use in many countries but still permitted in the US. Possible human carcinogen, apparently carcinogenic in animal experiments. The oxidative characteristics and/or metabolites of BHA and BHT may contribute to carcinogenicity or tumorigenicity.

WOW!! & Oh JEEZE !
I called the office today to ask if they knew anything about this product and they came back with a rather innocent answer
I truly prefer to listen to your advice Karen I know your knowledge in this arena is quite excellent and very tested
Thanks for your help and I will follow your direction
She's had three of these pills and the mucus is cleared up but I'll stop and I'll actually try and return them to him & tell him they are garbage....his Mom is a good friend...he'll tolerate the info, but why do they dispense this kind of crap??
Can you point me in the direction I need...what do I buy & where?
Thanks again

The thing is, this is isn't my opinion, lol. It's all right there in black and white. Those are the ingredients from the product's website (and I imagine they are on the packaging) and that's what BHA and Propylene Glycol are. And why would a probiotic need corn, wheat, chicken, by-products, etc.? It's the good bacteria, which is what probiotics are- that's beneficial. Certainly, corn, wheat and BHA aren't of any benefit.

The vets dispense this kind of crap because they don't research it and they don;t know what's in it. The salesman says, here's a good probiotic, dogs like it, and the vet orders it. Sometimes, the office manager orders it. I guarantee you the vet hasn't looked at what's in it, and might not know what that stuff is if he did look. That's not his field of expertise. He's not a nutritionist or a chemist.

The best probiotics I have found are Proviable DC (some vets do carry it; all can order it. You can also get it on-line) or iFlora Healthy Pets (order on-line)

But even Iams' Prostora (sold thru vets) is better than the Schein product. It has lots of suger, but no by-products, BHA, etc.

What was Derby's diagnosis? is she on any meds? Metronidazole? If so, be sure not to give any probiotics within two hours of the antibiotics.

Interesting question....she arrived in Fla. from Chic. with a double ear infection...the groomer noticed it....I took her to the vet.. & b/c we were leaving her at the sitters for a few days The vet gave her some kind of medication inside her ear vs. Her orally taking meds for a14 day period. So, she has not ingested any antibiotics, but has been treated with som type in her ear...now a 2 nd round recently....
We have a holistic pet store not far from where I live in Florida I might run over there tomorrow to see if they have a probiotic that you've suggested....I'd get her on it sooner if they have... He wanted her on it the,Butler Sheine, product till it was all gone ....looks like 30 days worth...YUK!!
So glad I thought I should check with DK before it went on to long..I had my doubts about it from the get go...probably incorrectly b/c of the name( use to seeing some foreign word used on products from China..."CHEIN"..but it provoked some action that was positive!!
Big thank yours again!!
Just decided to order the product Proviable DC from Amazon..I'll have it by Saturday
Next question is...just have her swallow it? For the same 30 day period he suggested? Someone on the website said she sprinkles it on the dog's food??? DerbyDoodle is 9 lbs...is there a weight concern for this substance?

Good choice.

we live in a scary consumer world, I knew it for humans but now I know it's not just for us.
