Hiking with doodles

Cisco is about 8 months now, and I wanted to take him hiking up in NH to see the fall foliage this weekend. Does anyone have any hiking with a doodle tips? How do I know what is "too much" for him? How much water should he be drinking? Basically, how do I keep him safe and choose the right trail for him?

One thing to consider is his age. I had always heard that for the first year while their bones, ligiments and tendons are still developing to not over do it with the running and jumping. How much of that he will be doing I don't know. Just something to consider. Most of all I would be worried about ticks!!! I don't live in tick country but have a huge fear of them when I go to the East Coast! Lots and lots of water! Have fun and don't forget the camera!
