Belle was spayed on Tuesday and we picked her up Wednesday from the vet. She doesn't seem to be in pain but since yesterday has been very itchy. Luckily she hasn't really been able to scratch the area but she keeps trying constantly. Did anyone else have a problem with their puppy being extremely itchy after the surgery? At first we couldn't figure out her strange behavior of scurrying around but it seems it may be part of her itchiness and frustration of not being ablt to scratch the area.

Do  a simple search on DoodleKisses with the words Benadryl and Claritin.  You will see many of us have to give our dogs a tablet at least once a day when allergies flare.

You should be able to see many discussions

Hope that helps

Thanks. Just went to the store and bought some and will give it to her:)
Hope it helps! Nothing worse than itch you can't scratch!
Debbie, I might try the primrose oil...I bet you anything that's what's causing the itchiness. Hopefully that will help! My vet also gave me something in a spray bottle that I only used twice but it seemed to help. You might want to call them and ask. Tip though...I can't renember the name of what they gave me but I can't imagine there are too many things in a spray bottle to treat itchiness so I'm guessing you'll get the same thing...use gloves or wash your hands right after spraying it and rubbing it in. I didn't read the directions, rubbed it into Finns foot and passed out 30 minutes later. I stopped using if because I thought if if made me pass out, I wasn't sure I wanted to give it to Finn but after I told my vet he said it was fine and I was just bring neurotic. (My vet and I go way back so he can tell me that without offending me). Good luck!
Debbie, I am very cautious about giving my pups anything, especially after I lost one of mine very young due to liver failure but benedryl is very safe for them and really does help with allergies as long as you have a proper dosage from your vet for her size. But, because this is an itch from hair growing vs an allergy, I would try the primrose oil first. I'm just not convinced the benedryl will help...but it's worth a try if the primrose oil doesn't work. I really wish their spay and nueter a were easier on them! Feel better Belle!
Is the primrose oil something I give her with food or something I put on her skin? I'm going to try the Benadryl now since I got it today and the vet recommended. I gave her some a little while ago, but I don't think it's helping yet. The vet wants to see her tomorrow if it doesn't help, so I can ask about the spray and the primrose oil.

Debbie, do another search on DK about Evening Primrose Oil also abbreviated as EPO.  There is a lot of information here.

This will not work on an itch in 10 minutes time. That's what Benadryl is for~ immediate relief!

EPO is a daily supplement that helps the skin long-term.   Like Fish Oil. You've probably heard of people taking Fish Oil for healthy joints and skin.

So, just concentrate on Post Surgical itch for now and look into EPO supplements in your leisure.  Most of us get EPO online from Puritan's Pride.

It's been a few days. How's Belle doing today?
Belle is doing better with the benedryl. She is still itchy but no where near as uncomfortable as she was. She is sleeping better too. And her incision is healing nicely.
