Ferguson is super smart. At 5 months, He knows all of his obedience commands. He's also stubborn so we are still working on consistency. But that will come.

But no matter what I try, he will not shake hands! I know it's a silly little trick...but everyone who sees how well behaved and trained he is, just assumes he will offer his paw and I really would like to teach him. OK..it's more for me than for him...but the thing is he is plenty smart enough. And I don't think it is a stubborn thing. He just doesn't seem to get it no matter how long I wait or how many times I show him. Any outside the box suggestions that I can try?

I have an idea... Try putting a nice delicious smelling treat in your palm and close your hand. Put your hand on the floor, or anywhere you think he is more likely to use his paw to get at a treat.

This wouldn't be a big deal for me.  I never taught it to my dogs because I know of other dogs who "overuse" it and are "pawing" to get treats even when they aren't asked.  It it is super important to you, I would suggest try using treats.  Ask him to sit and then to "shake" and put out your hand (treat in the other hand).  Then just wait and see if he figures it out.  The second he goes to put his paw into your hand give the treat.  Then repeat...and repeat....and repeat.

Donna, don't feel bad, Libby has never learned to shake and does NOT want to learn.  Many family members have tried and tried and she does NOT want to shake.  We gave up!  LOL   She had lots of training and has been a great dog and knows all her commands, but don't you dare ask her to shake:)
