Razor Burn

Boris is doing really well with us here at home. We have a large crate in the living room, a big sheepskin rug in the den, a big bed in the kitchen and a crate in our bedroom and he is in whichever room one of us is in. He seems to know that he has to stay on his bed and is sleeping a lot. He doesn't seem to be in pain and is walking well when I bring him on leash out for potty breaks. Riley is being very gentle and is not trying to play just goes over to him and licks his face or just checks him out or lies down outside the crate.  When they shaved him down for the operation they gave him some razor burn on his elbows and I am not sure what to put on them. Should I cover his bare legs with socks or put some ointment on and if so what type. They are red and there are a couple of spots where the skin is broken. I just want to make sure he is as comfortable as possible. He is such a brave boy.

I see no harm in putting some antibacterial ointment on it and covering until the skin heals. I also would not want him licking the open area or making the red/raw spots turn into real hot spots for him and it can then spread more.

I've never had good luck with putting ointment on JD, for anything. I don't know if his skin is just too sensitive, or it's the greasiness of most ointments, but the antibacterial ointments always seems to make things worse with him. I like analgesic sprays and cortisone sprays better, they allow the area to "breathe" and dry quickly so you aren't keeping the areas constantly moist.

I will pop into the vet tomorrow and ask for an analgesic spray and or ointment and some dressings.  I think if I cover them he will start to notice but I could put socks over a dressing. So far I haven't seen him aggravating  the areas but I don't want to chance it. I do think the elbows are making pressure contact with his bedding when he lies in particular ways and even though it's not a hard area it's not ideal.

Just to confuse the issue I would do a combo of creams. Antibacterial, just in case, and hydrocortisone. Sprays would be OK too. Rub it on gently and cover it with a lightweight sock. should get absorbed pretty quickly. Sometimes reactions can develop from the antibiotic creams so discontinue if it looks worse.

I have nothing to add but I've used F's combo remedy with success. I'm glad to hear that that Boris is resting and that RIley is being so gentle with him.  How sweet is that!

Neosporin - I use it on my dogs frequently.  Don't cover it and it will keep the skin from getting infected.  Poor boy.  He may enjoy you just putting the lotion on him.  Rub it in gently and talk to him while you are doing it.  We have had no problem with the dogs licking it off.  I feel for all of you, but it really will grow back quickly.

I really dont know if there is an absolute right answer here, so asking your vet would be the best. Every dog, just like every human, probably reacts, or heals with different applications of ointments, sprays, wrapped or unwrapped. What are you doing for his incisions? That might give you the best answer. I hope he heals from this quickly as elbows are constantly being rubbed. poor baby

Nicky, I have used neosporin on Lily Grace when she received a very bad grooming while we were on vacation. She did not have an adverse reaction. Hugs to you all. Boris seems to be handling this very well and Riley is a good big brother.
