There is a rescue here in Pittsburgh that helps all kinds of dogs. They are currently working in the Virgin Islands and have some dogs they would like to rescue. Due to the time of year, they must transport the dogs (they are all small) in the cabin of the airplane(s). They are looking for anyone travelling to the Virgin Islands in the near future who would be willing to bring back a dog in the cabin with them. They are able to drive up to 7 hours from Pittsburgh to get a dog that they can get back to the states. If you or anyone you know have a trip planned and would be willing to help, their name is FurKid Rescue and you can contact them on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/FurKid-Rescue/173552862104
They also have pictures of the pups they are trying to get back to Pittsburgh.
Given the impending cold spell (or polar vortex as I heard one person describe it today) I have been trying to get my hubby to agree to a trip to the Virgin Islands but no luck!

Diana, FurKid Rescue deals primarily with Pit Bulls. Just an FYI. They are also not a registered 501c3 not-for-profit.

I'm sure they are good people trying to help dogs, and that's worthwhile.

I am not sure about their 501c3 but I assume since they don't mention it that they are not but again, not sure.  They definitely have a focus on Pit Bulls (see the story on their web page about how they started) but they regularly rescue many different breeds.  They were very involved in rescuing dogs from the Florida Everglades last fall, if you heard about that effort.  I have not worked directly with them but have heard many good things about their efforts here and thought I would pass along their request.  I know if I was travelling in that direction I would love to help out and am hopeful that they can have their request shared enough that they find enough people to help bring those dogs here for a chance for a forever home.

FYI - It is easy to check if an organization is a 501c3 just go to Guidestar.com.  You have to register with the sight to search but registration is free and they don't bother you with emails, etc.

Yep, I checked Guidestar before I commented. :)

it is easy to look on the IRS website to see if an entity is a 501c3. As a CPA I check it all the time. You do not have to register.
