Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hopefully this is allowed.  I apologise if it is against board rules.  I am looking to buy my first golden/doodle and I am having a really hard time finding a breeder.  None of the websites seem to be very good and the few that looked good and legit, when I did some digging I found a review on a blog or what not saying they were actually a puppy mill.

So my questions is....

How did you guys choose?

Do you have any recommendations(GA,Florida, SC Recs)?

Is it better to find one within a drive or is it cruel to make a baby go on the plane?

How important is it that the breeder be a member of Golden doodles organisation?

THANKS!

Where are you located?

I am located in St Simons island, GA which is an hour north of JAX and an hour south of Savannah.  I am happy to drive 5 or less hours and I am also looking at breeders in Wisconsin/northern Illinoisas I am often there

I first talked to two local breeders online.  Didn't like the answers of the first one but did like the second.  Then I went and visited the second one's house and met the parents of the dog.  Worked out very good for me.  And it was nice that it was local, about an hour away.  I am in Arizona though so that probably wouldn't help you.

Do you have an organized doodle romp in your area?  I spoke to owners at the Seattle Doodle Romp & listened for breeders' names.  When it came time to search for Oskar, I first went to http://www.goldendoodle-labradoodle.org.  This is a website that breeders pay to be listed on, but each breeder must meet health testing criteria.

The breeder we chose is in Idaho…we didn't want to drive that far back & forth, so we paid the breeder's adult daughter to bring Oskar to us, flying in the cabin of the plane with her.  Since we had spoken with so many owners who bought their dogs from this breeder & had seen her operation in person, we had no qualms about getting our puppy this way.

Good luck !

Unfortunately there does seem to be one. I did find one 1.5 hours away but I think it is only a couple people, if that...

That is a good idea though! I am def willing to travel to get my puppy, but I am concerned about flying with a puppy in the cabin, especially since it won't know me.  Don't know how they handle it etc, but good to know you did that with yours.

My heart goes out to you but keep doing your home work and find the perfect  breeder and you won't be sorry . we learnt our lesson with our first doodle , I wanted a pup right away and trusted what the breeder said  ,,,,, ie....... yes she is a calm pup !  not !  we had to work with a trainer and lots of classes  so when we decided we wanted a second doodle I did my home work and found the perfect breeder . She answered every question we asked and then some . from the min our pup was conceived we had constant up dates right up until we got her . She was everything that we wanted and then some . Don't get me wrong I love our first doodle to pieces and wouldn't trade her for the world now  that we have her on the right track . our second doodle has been so enjoyable because she is calmer .  So take your time  and  you will get a great  pup .

Hi Evelyn,

Would you be kind enough to PM the two breeders you used. The one that you recommend and the one you do not (So I know to stay away)  THANK YOU!!

You can also try Goldendoodles.com the site has owner recommended breeders. Here is a link http://goldendoodles.com/breeders.htm This is where I found my breeder and then did some further research on each breeder to make sure they were all I wanted in a breeder. Here is a great link for what to look for in a breeder I personally did not use it but it is good things to find out. http://www.doodlekisses.com/notes/What_To_Look_for_In_a_Breeder.

Thanks for the information!  I just added you as a friend so I can PM you.  I would love to know the breeder you went with if you could PM.  THANKS!!

We're in Virginia and went to a breeder in Staunton, VA. Old Mill Doodles. We could not be happier with our Finn. He's an angel, quick learner, full of boundless energy and absolutely beautiful. If you want to make a road trip, you should check them out. Good luck!!

Thanks so much!  I will check them out!

I highly recommend you also do a search online here on DK too.

If you look deep, many well-known breeders have had some not so well pups.

Be careful.  Look deep.

Good Luck
