Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Ok so here it goes!
Back when I was looking for a doodle, I found a labradoodle that was older and already house broken. The owner had both parents and talked about how sweet and calm they were. She also praised the puppy and said she was sweet, docile etc etc.. So my mom, my kids and I drove 3 hours to go see her. On my way the lady then tells me that the dog was shy when she took her to the vet.. When we got there, she loved the owner but ran away from us and the kids.. The hairs in her back when up.. She was also filthy and had poop in her hair.. It was so wierd.. So she was an instant no no. The house on the outside was also disgusting and she kept us outside of the home.
I was curious about the parents so she brought out her mom lab who was crazy, then she brought out her stud poodle dad who she claimed was well mannered and it too was covered in filth and matted.
So end if that story, we left running from the place.. :-). Oh and she had other pups of different ages.

So then I found another breeder and she is great! She has the mother and is also very sweet. This is where we got Our Sam from. When she sent pictures of the dad, I recognized him from another breeder selling puppies which I know can happen.. Well I decided to dig in about the father and found out his owner is the First Lady who had the dirty everything.. I'm really upset bc I paid a lot for Sam and I'm worried he'll turn crazy like his dad? Sam is a sweet puppy but does show possession aggression with my kids and It worries me..

Should I be upset about who his dad is and where he came from??? Should I express my concerns to the breeder?

I also want to say that many people seem to get puppies without a realistic idea of what to expect in normal puppy stages. Many times what is described as aggression is a puppy stage. They all nip. They all can be naughty as heck and especially with kids running around. Our Hershey was the gentlest dog that ever lived, but she was a terrible nipper as a puppy and I thought I had brought home Cujo.  It's a stage.  It is a learning process for both the owner and the puppy. Good luck and enjoy your puppy.

Taquito still nips Charlotte occasionally - like an "air nip" then he runs from her.  She doesn't do anything to provoke it except slowly approach him.  We just deal with it.

Just to add one more thing, as I agree with all that has been said--forget that "runt" idea--his personality is his personality and being smaller is not important--he does not remember it anymore than your kids remember crawling around on the floor as a baby--training him and making sure you avoid potentially hazardous situations are the things to focus on now--not blame based on his past--the FUTURE is where you are headed....and he will be fine as long as YOU do your homework and put in the time...any dog can be crazy when in the wrong home with no training, so don't be discouraged.

LOVE your post, Ginny!

This is not uncommon, but I'm curious about the statement "crazy like his Dad".  Never mind dirty dogs, the 'crazy' could have been nothing more than timing, stress, etc - or the usual Poodle exuberance?  it is very common for an outside stud to be used,  generally using an outside stud means a good thing.

Runt is an ugly word, mostly misused, my girl is a 'runt' and she's incredible.   Puppy description: piranha with 4legs.  Kids and puppies don't mix well until puppy is fed, tired, and pottied - that also works for kids :)     So many words of wisdom on this site for parents of pups and kids - oh, for all of us.

Sam is lucky, growing up is hard work and his teeth hurt and he has so much to learn. Agree, normal puppy stuff can be pretty fierce at times, but it zooms by.             try yogurt popsicles -

You shouldn't.  I hope you neuter your pets and will not be passing on any bad characteristics but your pups behavior will be determined by your training and his new home.  Take it as a lesson learned and I hope you did not pay the high fees you would have with a genuine breeder.  If you got him for less than $1,000 just walk away and leave it at that.  Dogs (and homes) should never be dirty.  Dogs that are raised in those types of environments are reasonably crazy.  So, how is your new puppy otherwise?  Remember, it is YOU who will make him the type of dog you want to be around.  Get in control of the aggression immediately.  There are plenty of classes and trainers out there to help you.

Thanks everyone for letting me rant.. After talking with the breeder who I adore and is really sweet, I feel more confident I can break Sam of his bone issue.. If not then I will only let him have those certain yummy treats when my kids are at school.. :-). He is the smartest little guy and really is lovey.. I don't like the place his dad came from but he was raised by a great breeder and that's what matters most..
I mean, who could resist this face? :-)
