I would love thoughts on puppies being micro-chipped.

Yes!  Luna is microchipped and it makes me feel a lot more secure.  She plays in an unfenced off-leash dog park (it's basically a huge wooded area) and if she were to ever run away after being spooked who knows where she'd end up :/

My cats are chipped with Avid, as that was what our vet in Texas used. Enzo is chipped with Hone Again. The same only different :p. Just different manufacturers. Both work the same, and both get the job done. Make sure registrations are done.
Funny story....our oldest cat is a rescue. Over the years we have been transferred all around the country. Simon is purely and indoor cat only. When he was about 9, I was bringing him in for his yearly vet visit and bringing a newbie kitten in for Vacs and to be chipped. The Vet chipped the kitten and scanned him to show me and was playing around and scanned Simon, the old guy. As I'm saying, that's a waste, he is not chipped ... The scanner reads a number! The rescue I got him from never told us he was chipped and Simon was still registered to them!
After a friends list their indoor cat when it got out of the house, all our pets are chipped, no matter what.

CHIP!

and if in doubt, I came in here to give  you this link

and for goodness sakes -Register your chip

Can a tortoise actually “run” away?

Whatever the velocity, a 100 pound tortoise lumbered 30 miles before he was found and taken in by a foster family. It took the reptile six months to cover the distance.

Earlier this month the animal was reunited with his Arizona owners, according to the Associated Press.

When taking care of the tortoise, which was renamed “Eddie,” became too much, the foster family decided to place an advertisement in the Copa Monitor, a local publication, in hopes of finding his owner, the AP reported.

“Eddie has quite the personality!” the advertisement said. “He was found as a stray and appeared to be very well taken care of, yet no one came forward to claim him. He is about 15 years old and will live another 70+ years, so a family who is committed to him for life is very, very important.”

The news of the mystery tortoise caught the attention of George and Mary Plumb, who had two tortoises — Samson and Goliath — escape their home at different times last year. One was recovered but the other made a clean getaway.

A microchip that had been implanted in the tortoise that was more than found a marathon’s distance away from home confirmed it was indeed the missing member of their menagerie. Whether it was Samson or Goliath, though, was anyone’s guess.

George Plumb told the AP his next big challenge is figuring out how to keep the curious reptiles from plodding away from home again.

“I don’t have the best tortoise enclosure, I’ll be honest,” he said. “I probably need a brick wall.”

100% yes! I can't imagine not having my pack microchipped. It is a nice peace of mind for emergencies!

Working with a rescue, we get numerous calls a week about lost dogs. The ones with microchips are significantly more likely to make it home than those who are not.

Our dogs and the rescue I am with use the HomeAgain microchip company.

Absolutely we did it! I work at a shelter on the weekends, and I can personally attest to their usefulness when a stray or lost dog comes in!

I'm a definite yes for the microchip.  Not a big investment, but could be a great reward.
