Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

You really can't, unless you do a DNA test.
I have a question and I'll probably look stupid but the reason I wanted a goldendoodle over a labradoodle is because purebred labs have a "short-haired tail" and a retriever has a "long-haired tail". I was afraid that I might have a long-haired doodle with a short-haired tail and I was afraid to take that chance. Is that a possibility??? Otherwise, I couldn't tell the difference between the two. Of course, the other reason is that I have always loved the golden retriever because of the longer hair, but I knew that mixing the two I would definitely get the longer hair.
Pure-bred Labs have short hair all over their bodies, lol.
Long haired dogs have longhair all over their bodies. There's a gene that controls hair length, and you can't get it for just certain parts. :) If the dog has long hair, that's going to include the tail, too.
Some f-1 labradoodles have a distinctive look that I haven't ever confused with goldendoodles, but mostly, you just can't tell.
It does not work all the time, but sometimes the Labradoodles look more blockish and the Goldendoodles look more roundish. But in most cases you cannot tell.
The Labradoodles who get the Lab build do look more blocky. The problem is, an awful lot of them get the Poodle build from that side of their genetics. And since there is a lot of poodle in both LDs and GDs, that poodle build is more common than either of the Retriever breeds' builds. :)
And I wish I had a nickel for every time someone asked me if JD was a Goldendoodle, lol.
