With it being winter I thought a laser light would be a great way for Miss Beasley to get exercise, I told Miss Beas trainer about it and she said ..umm that's not really a good idea, so I ask her why and she said, if you have a child come over with a walker that has lights or a toy with lights , or those cute little light up shoes kids wear, the dog can attack it trying to get to the lights. Also it can teach them to chase cars bc of the tail lights . I never even gave that a second thought . I stopped using it right then, I can see how it would make a dog do that, all I would have to do is pick up that laser light , I wouldn't even have to turn it on and Miss Beasley would start running around the coffee table looking for it. Any other helpful tips you guys have, I'd sure appreciate them. #whenyouknowbetteryoudobetter #firsttimepuppyowner

For some dogs it also creates an impulsive behavior where they have to get the light even after it is gone and they become crazed looking for it. Yup just like Miss Beasley did, in my opinion it is not a behavior I want to nurture or even create so I would never do it. I am glad your trainer was against it! If you are looking for a way to expel energy with this weather ( I was having the same issue, but I got creative) maybe try a treadmill, playing fetch with soft toys, dog puzzles or interactive toys (they wear them out) or playing hide and go seek or even doing longer training sessions. Training sessions can really wear out a dog, although be careful not to ever end a training session on a bad note always let your pup end it with something she does well!
Thanks so much, we have a wonderful trainer she is not only a trainer but a friend. Do you think Miss Beasley will forget about that light in time or do you think it is now instilled , I would hate to think as hard as I've tried to do whats best for her that I would have done something that can't be turned around . I have started playing fetch for 10 to 15 minutes and doing some training 3 times a day until the weather breaks and we can get back to our walking :) thanks for the good ideas I've not done the dog puzzles yet, I'll check into them.
I would just put it away and not let her see it or it could trigger her to go look for it again!
Debbie, you have totally rained on my parade. :( That said, THANK YOU! I've always thought this was hilarious fun as well (and great excursive for our dogs who LOVE IT!) So thank you for sharing something I never would have even thought of so that I don't have future issues with the things you mentioned. With the desire to do therapy work with Maslow, I can't believe I didn't think of this considering I've been SO careful about socializing her and keeping her calm. Thanks for the wake up call. :)
Same here never gave it a thought , so if anyone else knows anything we may be doing that we shouldn't feel free to make a list on this discussion
I am going to try the toy on a stick, I actually saw that last night on a video ...our trainer works for and sales personal protection dogs so her thoughts are always on keeping kids and people and the dog safe ....
Thank You so much , it's hard to get a good pic of her bc she is dark , even her eyes are black , I am seeing some cooper around her nose as she gets a bit older ... Safiy is very handsome , If I get another doodle and I may , that's the color I want !
