My Yarrow's spay is booked for Feb. 19. She'll be 23 weeks. I'm a nervous wreck and have been reading over all the advice and recommendations. I wonder if there is any truth to the idea that they do not ever become fully emotionally mature if they are spayed too soon. And is 23 weeks (5 months + 9 days) too soon? I read that in The Monks of New Skete book and on veterinarian sites online.
Due to the fact that there's no dog park here for her to play with other dogs (What kind of a place has no dog park?!), and that our very senior dog is not able to run and play with her for more than 10 seconds, we're getting Yarrow a sister dog (collie) first weekend in March. I'd like Yarrow to be healed before we surprise her with her baby sister.
I'm a worrier by nature (astrological moon baby). Advice?

My older brother and his daughter are afraid of dogs, in particular the breeds I mentioned. They've had some traumatic experiences I can't negate and I want them to visit me.
So adorable! And hey, what is wrong with Rottweilers :) I have an 11 year old one and she is the greatest!
No offence to the breed. One of the nicest dogs I ever met was my sister-in-law's Rottweiler, Jesse. One of the sweetest dogs I ever shared my home with (almost 16 years) was Kali, my Doberman cross. A-hem, I should say 'Dober-woman'. But many people are intimidated by them and I want to remain approachable in my still new neighborhood.
I'm sure Rosey is lovely. :)
Paisley is GORGEOUS! I love the name as well - perfect. A blue mere collie is beautiful. Our first GSD was a Shepherd Collie mix, ahh what a lovely breed of dog. We have cousins who have collies. I feel this is a breed that has sort of fallen aside, have done some reading on several breeds that seem to have fallen out of favor, for whatever reason if any. Should be an excellent sibling for your Yarrow.
I completely understand the process of elimination on the new pup, we went through similar thoughts. One thing led to another and our Doodle has a little brother MIniature American Shepherd now - - it's been just wonderful. At five months old, our girl is beginning to revoke his puppy license, he responds nicely. Lots of work, but lots of laughs and love.
When "every cell in my body" speaks, it's best to listen. :) That's the voice one should never ignore.
With surgery and new pup timing so close, be certain to have space that allows separation. Yarrow will be feeling better than she ought to by day four, new pup will excite and confuse her, but oh my you are ready - this is going to be fun.
I tried to move the surgery up - to today - but Yarrow had a different plan. She found and ate something outside this morning throwing the plan off. We're back on for next week.
I have crates, kennels and gates. But the vet assures me that she'll be ready for the pup by March 1st. (?)
You, and your neighbors, will be glad you did it.
Oh gee, my neighbour Todd with his hyper boy dogs would have his hands full for a while trying to walk past my place if she ever went into heat. Actually, lots of people walk their dogs down the back alley because it borders the woods. That would be chaos!
Oh Deb...we have all been in your shoes...I was a blubbering mess the day of Ellie`s spay. I tried to keep busy, but all I could think about was her being somewhere unfamiliar and missing her family. It tore my heart apart. But the day was over before I knew it and we picked her up that same afternoon...it was a wonderful moment...she was fine and our biggest concern was how to keep a 6 month old puppy quiet & still. We spent a lot of time on the couch together for the next couple of days watching movies together and snuggling. Yarrow will be just fine...it`s a routine, normal procedure. We will be thinking of you on that day and sending positive thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery for sweet Yarrow:)
Thank you. I shouldn't have any trouble keeping the house quiet and peaceful for her recovery. I've been extra worried because my guy is away until the end of February and he's usually my rock. I want to get this done before he returns home. She'll go crazy when she sees her 'pappa' on the evening of Feb 26th. Is that enough time for her to heal in between the 19th and 26th?
They say it takes 10-14 days to be healed enough for them to run & play, but I would say that her incision should be in really good shape by the time he returns home.
