Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
My Goldendoodle Archie just turned 1 yesterday and he has never really been much of a food guy. He always ate twice a day (7-8am and 5:30-6pm). In the last 2 or 3 months though we have dropped him down to once a day because he usually doesn't eat breakfast....I put the food in his bowl in the morning and he doesn't eat that until 3-4pm in the late afternoon or until he poops 2 or 3 times in the morning. Does anyone have a doodle like this? I've always found it strange he doesn't really enjoy his bowls of food.
We changed his food from puppy to 1+ last week if that makes any difference? Also, he is eating the Science Diet small bites because he never seems to enjoy the regular sized bites.

I know Karen will step in here in a minute but I want to first suggest get him off Science Diet!
Hah my first thought exactly. Much better (and probably tastier) foods out there!
Ok, why is that? LOL just asking...I know it was suggested to me by a popular and well known Vet in my area, so I am just asking as to why?
Also, what should I get him on?
Thanks!
Sam
Hang out in the food group for any period of time and you will learn quickly that vets are not the experts on pet nutrition.
Here is a clip from Karen found in a previous discussion:
Hill's is owned by Colgate-Palmolive, a huge multinational corporation which outsources not just the manufacturing of the food but the ingredients and even the purchasing of the ingredients. There is no quality control whatsoever, and this kind of third party brokering is what led to the deaths and permanent illnesses of thousands of dogs and cats throughout the USA in 2007. It was because of this that many dog food websites and groups like this one started, and many new privately manufactured dog food companies came to be. You do not want to feed your dog a brand that is owned by a huge corporation. You want a company that only makes dog food, orders the ingredients themselves and not through brokers, knows what is in there and where it came from, and does not keep the information secret from the consumers.
There is no nutritional curriculum required in veterinary school; whatever education vets receive in vet school is sponsored by Hill's Science Diet and Purina. These companies also sell their foods through vets. Not only is this a cinlfict of interest, but your vet's information about the food comes from the very people who sell it. This has been researched and publicly documented by Marion Nestle, PhD, professor of nutrition and widely regarding as one of the leading authorities on both human and canine nutrition.
Yes, your vet receives kickbacks from Hill's.
I strongly urge you to ignore any advice your vet gives you about dog food. Medical issues, yes, dog food, no. My vets and i have agreed to disagree on this issue.
The ingredients are cheap, and the quality control is non-existent, even in the Rx foods.

I know Karen goes more in depth in the food group but vets really have no education in nutrition, they sell it because they make money off of it and the education in nutrition they do have comes from Hills! It is really a crappy expensive food. It has terrible ingredients that have no therapeutic effects. Check out the recommended food list and there are a lot better choices! Is there a reason he was prescribed that? If not any of those recommended foods could work! The best being Orijen and Acana. I personally feed Fromm! Check it out!
It just so happens that we have a brand new discussion on this topic in The Food Group. Probably the most common topic besides loose poop, lol.
So rather than repeat all of the info, here's the link. http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup/forum/topics/my-dog-...
Us doodle moms sure do love to talk about our dogs poop, lol!
It's important stuff! ;)
Amen. But I am not going to start discussing why (and reproducing 5 years worth of info) here in the main forum, lol. That's what TFG is for.
Here is a link to our recommended food! http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup/forum/topics/recomme... Also here is one of the many discussions on the Science Diet food http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup/forum/topic/search?g...
My favorite discussion on picky eaters, both funny and informative: http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup/forum/topics/an-ode-...
Thank you all for the input. I will make a change to Archies food...He used to be on Blue Buffalo and Merrick. But that stuff gave him the runs constantly LOL so I changed that, Can Orijen or Acan be found in PetSmart or PetCo?
Thanks!
Sam
