What is the difference in the Orijen puppy food and the large puppy breed?!

I was quickly trying to find a difference and the goofball clerk at the store had no earthly idea what she was talking about.

There are teeny little minor differences in the nutrient percentages. The only significant difference is that the large breed formula is 4% lower in fat.

Orijen Puppy

Orijen Large Breed Puppy

There is no reason for you to even look at a "large breed" formula unless your breeder predicted that your pup's adult weight is going to be over 85 lbs. "Large breed" food formulas are intended for the giant breeds who do not reach full skeletal growth until well past their first birthdays.

I have a seven and a half year old goldendoodle.  He was diagnosed without the surgery, with irritable bowel syndrome.  I was able to clear up his diarrhea with grain free dehydrated food from "The Honest Kitchen" which I have not seen mentioned here.  He recently started vomiting irregularly and I have cleared this up so far by rotating his protein source instead of giving him the same one all the time.  The Honest Kitchen (THK) has a base dehydrated food that does not include any protein.  You can add raw or cooked whatever you want.  I highly recommend this company, they are based in Southern CA and from everything I can tell have really great quality food.

Jackie, THK is on the recommended food list, there are a few members on here who have had great success with their food..me being one of them! They are a great company to deal with..I'm glad the food has helped your dog!

Honest Kitchen is a dehydrated raw product and is listed in the "Raw Formulas Only" section. We highly recommend it for dogs with IBS.

It did not agree with our puppy.  We switched to Wellness Core Grain Free Puppy and have had much better luck.  But what works for one puppy might not work for another!

Premium Edge is owned and made by Diamond. We do not recommend their products, as they have a very poor track record with quality control.

Hi there, just wondering, is there any information on TLC pet food? https://www.tlcpetfood.com/default.asp?

Like Life's Abundance, TLC Pet Food is only sold through a multilevel marketing program, otherwise called a pyramid scheme. There is no question in my mind that your breeder "recommended" this food. I sure hope your purchase agreement and/or health warranty doesn't require you to use it.

It's not a part of the contract that the pup only eats TLC. The breeder feeds them that and I was wondering if I should continue the pup on that or if I should consider different options. I have looked into locations that sell some of the brands that are recommended in this forum and they are still conveniently located. So if this isn't a good brand to go on based on nutrition, then I will likely go with another brand.

Keep the pup on whatever the breeder is feeding for two weeks after he/she comes home and then you can switch. Be sure you don't sign up for "auto-shipments" of the food, it is very difficult to cancel or get out of that.

I personally would not choose to feed a food with such limited formula choices or so much grain. What happens if it turns out that your dog doesn't tolerate grains very well? Or the particular protein sources in this food?

And what happens if for some reason there is a delay in shipping, and you cannot run out to any store to buy your dog's food?

The breeder feeds and recommends this food because she makes commission and gets a huge price break. There are dozens of equally good and much better foods available for less hassle, less money, and with much wider formulas options.

Hi Nadini . Our breeder also used TLC. Of course I listened to the very knowledgeable DK members and kept him on the same food for at least 2 weeks...to be honest it was a little longer. TLC is not a terrible product but i didnt like that all the protien ingredients were in 'meal' form and not 'meat'. We bought a bag of orijen and started the transition. The price difference is minimal.
