From what I've read on these DoodleKisses message threads, minis definitely stop growing much sooner than standards do. Especially if both of their parents are also minis and multi-generation. It was expected that my Kona might get to 30 to 35 pounds since his mom was a 40 pound F1B goldendoodle, but his father's multi-generation miniatrue Australian Labradoodle genes spoke up a bit louder, and Kona stopped growing at 8 months old and 24 pouonds.
I definitely think of Kona as a mini, Gwyn. Ned looks lots bigger than Kona in person, yet he is only 1/2" taller and weighs only 4 pounds more - all that puffy fluffiness makes Ned seem like a big guy! :-}
Since Kona is nearly always the smallest doodle around, it really is easier to just call him a Mini. When I bought him, the breeder thought his litter would reach 30 to 35 pounds and I bought him as a "Medium". Ha! But she also picked him out specifically for me because I wanted a smaller, calmer dog and he was by far the runt of the litter (he was 3.5 pounds when I got him at 8 weeks old and his 9 siblings were all between 6 and 8 pounds by that time. And Ned passes as a mini to most people because they are used to seeing bigger "medium" doodles. Ned looks taller because he definitely has "poofier" hair! Ha! However, right this minute, Kona is pretty poofy! He just got back from a bath and blow out. He looks even more like Ned right now!
Take a picture and we can compare and decide which dog is which as identified by Kona's blue tag.
To the uninitiated, we do say Ned is a mini simply because it is easier.
