We came across a breeder online who is downsizing, meaning selling adult AL breeder dogs anywhere from $500-$1000. Upon visiting this breeder, the conditions were less than desirable and then we found out later that this breeder is not a member of the ALAA, in fact, he/she was kicked out due to not meeting the breeding standards: not testing the dogs for genetic defaults, etc. The dog we went to go look at is female, has bad teeth and the breeder had no idea if she had any shots at all, nor was she sure of the age of the dog. The dog, like all her/his other dogs stunk and didn't' look to be in the best of shape....we weren't allowed inside the house due to the condition of the house. Can someone give me their opinion if my relative should still consider purchasing this dog? Me personally, I wouldn't for several reasons.... And I wouldn't spend $500 for it either! Comments, suggestions, concerns please? Thanks DK!

Agreed. I emailed the Quality Control guy so it will be interesting to see if I get a response or what type of response I get?!?!

I don't have an ALD and have no experience with the ALAA, but I do have an awful lot of information about an awful lot of breeders. Send me the breeder's name in a PM and I'll see what I can find for you.

Appalling!  No way!  Handing over money rewards this person and keeps her in business.  More misery. Hoping these dogs make their way to rescue.

This just sounds like a heartbreak in the making. Taking on an older breeder dog who is in this condition, besides not knowing the age could mean she was breed much too young and much too many times in horrible conditions and care. The teeth and lack of shots alone is just the beginning of the problems these poor dogs will have. They all need to be surrendered and given proper vet care and a home. This makes me mad and I want to call the authorities on them, certainly is the house is in that bad a condition, there must be some laws they are breaking????? Or maybe Im just wishful thinking.
Thanks everyone for your valuable input and/or advice!
It's a terrible situation and my mother in law is overlooking
the potential health and teeth issues out of sympathy for the
dog. And is still willing to pay $500 to "rescue" this dog! She
makes comments like, "there is no ALD for $500 out there!"
That's cheap for a ALD as I had originally made her aware of
the price of this breed. My issue is I feel responsible for taking her
to look at the dog when I really thought the breeder was ALAA as
well as reputable!!! Frustrating for me!

Make sure your MIL also knows that this dog has more than likely never lived in a home, and besides the health issues, is going to require every kind of training there is, beginning with housebreaking. In rescue, former breeding dogs with this kind of background of neglect typically require weeks of assessment and behavioral modification in foster care before they can be adopted out as pets.

Can I ask what "ALD" and the price of this mix (it's not a "breed")  has to do with a dog being a good companion and pet?
